SNAPSHOT: “A contested marking forward who competes hard and impacts the scoreboard in bunches.” – Michael Alvaro
After coming into the year as a prospect with plenty of potential but just as much room for improvement, Aidan Schubert well and truly delivered on the promise he has always shown in 2025. Also a state representative in basketball at Under 16 and 18 levels, the 198cm talent put all his eggs into the footballing basket heading into his top-age campaign, and that decision has paid off to the maximum.
Schubert played in Central District’s Under 16 flag in 2023 and was part of the Under 18 team which made last year’s Grand Final. This year, seeking a new challenge, he needed just one audition in the Reserves before being selected in the Bulldogs’ League side for their elimination final. Despite his side going down, Schubert acquitted himself nicely with four marks (two contested) and a goal.
His goalkicking feats have been remarkable this year. After being held to two behinds in Round 1 of the Under 18 season, he went on to slot 28 majors in his remaining 12 appearances. He hit the scoreboard in each of those games, booting multiples on eight occasions with three bags of four. It was no surprise, then, to see him take out the SANFL Under 18 MVP award after his outstanding season.
Further to that, Schubert stepped up to perform on the representative stage. He made a splash with four goals in South Australia’s first match against the Allies, going on to finish with 10 in four games as the All-Australian full forward. With pure performance and a strong rate of improvement throughout the year, he firms as the best key forward in the draft crop.

STRENGTHS:
+ Aerial ability
+ Competitiveness
+ Contested marking
+ Mobility
+ Reach
+ Scoreboard impact
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Composure
- Kicking
Schubert's key strengths go hand-in-hand, with his marking and aerial ability lending to his significant scoreboard impact. He is a difficult player to combat, standing at 198cm with terrific reach and mobility. It allows him to set, jump, and extend at the ball, accessing it at higher points than his direct opponent. Further to that, he's highly competitive in one-on-one situations and has no trouble standing tall in packs.
Around a fifth of his average 7.5 marks per game in the SANFL Under 18s were contested, and he racked up six while representing South Australia against Vic Metro. While he looks raw and rangy, Schubert is accustomed to clunking the ball cleanly overhead and will be a force once he adds more size. He was tested in the aerial realm at senior level, but remained competitive and would at least bring the ball to ground.
Another string to Schubert's bow is his ability as a second ruck. Many AFL clubs are on the hunt for genuine ruck-forwards, and Schubert has made that role his own in 2025. He peaked with 35 hitouts in Round 15 of the SANFL Under 18 season and averaged 4.4 clearances per game, proving to be a dextrous asset around the ball who stays engaged with the play. His reach and one-on-one craft translate well to the ruck.
Schubert's goalkicking record also stacks up with the best this draft crop has to offer. He was held goalless just once at Under 18 level and was part of South Australia's lethal one-two tall combo alongside Mitch Marsh. To compound his goalkicking feats, he averaged almost nine score involvements at the National Championships and was central to the Croweaters' potent forwardline
Part of what allows Schubert to so freely create and cap off scoring chains is his ability to work up the ground. He offers an option down the line and often doesn't hesitate to turn and go quickly. Having worked hard on his agility and leading patterns in preseason, it's clear those developments paid off in the long run. It saw him thrive with each step up in competition - something the youngster prides himself on.
Though, while Schubert's work often earns maximum reward on the scoreboard, he can continue to refine his end product. He finished with 28.21 for Centrals this year and while generally a steady kick over the mark, is much more erratic in open play. Adding a level of composure to his decision making and execution in the front half will make him all the more damaging - taking away the tendency to blaze away. Being a dual-spot athlete growing up, adding that layer of footy IQ and skill will come quickly in a professional environment.
DRAFT RANGE: 6-12
SUMMARY:
Schubert is not only arguably the best key forward in the crop, but also a genuine top 10 option available in the open draft. He boasts traits which lean towards shaping as a long-term developable type, but has the character to suggest he’ll be in a hurry once he hits the top level. The South Australian has gotten a glimpse of senior footy and that will further aid his readymade status. Still, he has plenty to work on in the way of craft and polish, so will be learning on the go. Having the ability to chop out as a second ruck only boosts Schubert’s value and he’ll likely land in the latter half of the top 10. Local club Adelaide lurks at pick 14, while St Kilda (pick seven) may look for long-term support for prize recruit Tom De Koning, along with Sydney at pick nine.
