SNAPSHOT: “A powerful forward with high scoreboard impact who has also spent time across the other two lines.”

A career footballer, Alannah Welsh has long looked like a player who will take the competition by storm. Her suite of weapons make her an incredibly damaging forward, though over the years she has also played in defence, and through the midfield where a lot of her athletic and footballing traits adapt well.

Her journey started at Tweed Coolangatta almost 10 years ago and it started the first of a whopping 161 games played between 2016-2025. Being able to play through the global pandemic was a big plus, managing 14 games in 2020 when she was 12, playing across the Under 13s, 14s and 15s. By 2022, Welsh had followed the pathway into the Suns, where she ran out for Gold Coast in the National Development Championships.

That year, Welsh was a bottom-ager in the competition, and a triple bottom-ager in terms of draft years, but even still she caught the eye. Meanwhile, Welsh was playing for Burleigh Bombers where she won the premiership in a stacked side which featured the likes of Havana Harris, Ava Usher, Nyalli Milne, Sienna McMullen and Bronte Parker.

When 2024 rolled around, Welsh was truly identified as one of the players to watch for the following season. She had already represented Queensland as an Under 16s player, but by her 17th year, she was starring for Southport en route to a QAFLW premiership. She booted 19 goals in 10 games, including three in the grand final and seven across the finals series. Her 13 goals in the final four games gave an insight into what she was capable of.

Earlier that season, she booted nine goals in her four Coates Talent League Girls games for the Suns Academy, including a ridiculous 4.10 against Calder Cannons in Round 7. A permanent spot with Queensland – which included six goals across three games – followed, and her form throughout the 12 months resulted in Welsh earning a spot in the Under 17 Futures game at GMHBA Stadium.

Welsh would be selected for the National Academy, and aside from a minor injury mid-year that saw the talented forward miss one national championships game, she would still boot five goals across her three matches, including the game-winner against South Australia.

STRENGTHS:

+ Scoreboard impact
+ Contested marking
+ Power
+ Endurance
+ Forward craft
+ Versatility
+ Confidence

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Composure
- Short kicking
- Accuracy

While Welsh has played in defence and through the middle - and has the traits to do that - she is a natural forward, and that is where she loves to play the most. Her forward craft and goal sense are superb, and while at times she can blaze away and go for the impossible goal over looking inboard and passing, Welsh has that confidence - and quite often the licence - to make it her moment and own it.

From a scoreboard perspective, very few general forwards have done as much damage as Welsh, who looms as a potential first round prospect and one of six Suns set to land in the top 20 or so. The way she can maximise her involvements with fantastic contested marking and multiple shots on goal, make her such a headache for opposition coaches.

Welsh is one of those players that can be well held for three quarters, and then come out and boot three or four goals in a burst to win her side the game. However by the same token, she can also kick 2.6 and have those opportunities of which some go begging. Without a doubt, Welsh has the 'aura' that all good forwards have, and coaches are quick to make moves to try and quell her, as the Allies did when Welsh was starting to get off the chain in the final term of the national championships match.

So strong overhead, Welsh reads the ball in flight exceptionally well, and her forward craft enables her to know when to fly, and when to crumb. She lets her football do the talking and takes parts of Jack Ginnivan and Nick Watson's games that enable her to talk the talk and walk the walk, while not minding a creative celebration.

While Welsh's forward craft and impact around goals is elite, she also clocked the fastest 2km time trial at the National Draft Combine with an eye-catching 7:06. The Suns Academy member has a nice power-endurance mix which sees her have bursts up the ground and work back to goals, looking to win multiple possessions within a chain.

Welsh identified her short kicking as an area to continue developing, which comes with the lowering of the eyes and looking for potential centring options when under pressure or at very difficult angles. Without a doubt a Goal of the Year nomination - or 10 - are likely to be in her future, because while she can tend to do too much when she has options, some of the majors she has delivered have undoubtedly been highlight reel worthy.

In a system where players tend to be more hesitant and too team-oriented when scoreboard pressure is needed, Welsh doesn't flinch. She takes the moment upon herself and whether she delivers or misses, the talented forward never shies away from the big moments. If there is a player you need to count on to step up, then Welsh is a great candidate because she has that confidence to go one-out with an opponent and make the game her own.

Welsh has the ability to impact forward, she has the potential to kick Goal of the Year, win Mark of the Year or deliver anything from half a dozen goals to double-digit scoring shots. With refinement on her decision making inside 50 without losing her edge and confidence, Welsh can be a unique forward option and one of the better contested marks for her size.

DRAFT RANGE: 15-30

SUMMARY:

Alannah Welsh has a stack of weapons that will catch the eye at any level she plays. Tied to the Gold Coast Suns Academy, the National Academy member is one of a number of potential top 20 players, though bids tend to come a touch later if they are not in the top few names. Given her ability to score and the Suns’ current deficiencies in that area, it seems like a match made in heaven.
