SNAPSHOT: “A talented dual-sport athlete and this year’s top ruck prospect; boasting clean hands, mobility which defies his height, and enormous upside.” – Michael Alvaro
The ‘basketball background’ infatuation in AFL circles is set to continue in 2024, as South Australian Alex Dodson stakes his claim to be the top ruck prospect available. After making the state Under 16 squad in 2022, Dodson put his footballing commitments on hold in favour of his first love, basketball, and missed the entire 2023 season.
Dodson had paved a credentialed path in basketball, captaining SA and even representing Australia at Under 18 level. Most notably, he missed game one of the AFL Under 18 National Championships this year having jetted off to Germany to help his country take out gold in the world renowned Albert Schweizer Cup.
Returning to Sturt, Dodson made his SANFL Under 18s debut in Round 6 and went on to play nine games. He also slotted straight into the Croweaters’ representative side to run out the rest of the championships, which culminated in All Australian honours. It was there where Dodson’s star truly rose, on the big stage.
He and the Double Blues also earned a finals berth, with the 203cm talent proving integral on the back of an average 24 disposals and 27 hitouts over the last month of the season. He could hardly have been more impressive given the context of how little high-level football he has played, and has chosen to pursue the native code over basketball.
STRENGTHS:
+ Clean hands
+ Follow-up work
+ Mobility
+ Size
+ Upside
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Exposure
- Forward craft
There is no denying the upside Dodson presents given how much footballing development he has missed. Not only that, but athletic 203cm talents don't grow on trees, let alone ones with clean fundamental skills and mechanics. Dodson ticks a lot of boxes in terms of what recruiters look for in rucks, and while some crystal-balling is at play, he is quality at the present, too.
Dodson is accustomed to getting his hands on the ball, and you could hazard a guess that his basketball background is a key factor behind his stoppage nous. He engages well in the ruck contest, posting against and jostling with opponents, and attempting to use his size advantage to guide the ball down to teammates before following up on his initial acts.
Quick and clean at either claiming the ball from the ruck to clear, or gathering at ground level to feed his teammates, Dodson puts up strong clearance numbers. He imposed himself among the inner circle with averages of 19.7 hitouts, and 3.7 clearances during the National Championships, and boosted those numbers to 24.9 and 4.6 in the SANFL Under 18s.
What's more, he can also have an impact in general play. Dodson's size and reach make him difficult to beat in aerial contests, as he can pluck the ball at higher points. He also roams around the ground supremely well for a player his size, sweeping behind the ball or providing a target down the line to take contested marks.
While he already performs at quite a high level, there are still elements of rawness to Dodson's game. He can add a little more strength to his frame to compete at the next level, and perhaps remove a few unforced errors from his game - especially with ball in hand. Developing his forward craft will also be useful, to gain a second position and compound his hurt factor.
DRAFT RANGE: 15-30
SUMMARY:
Being the leading ruck prospect in the draft means Dodson may well be in high demand. He will be a particular point of difference among the top-end talents, who for the most part are midfielders. Many other talls will likely slot into the same range, though Dodson is the only pure ruck. Clubs in the premiership window looking for a developable, long-term tall project should look no further. He has come a long way in such a short space of time, so can only continue that trend at the top level. Expect Dodson to attract interest at the back-end of the first round, or early in the second.
