SNAPSHOT: “A super athletic tall with elite forward pressure who can hit the scoreboard.”

Alicia Blizard is a talented Indigenous tall forward with some serious upside having come through the West Australian football pathways. Though knee complaints did impact her journey in recent years, she showed through the later parts of 2024 and in her top-age 2025 season that she is fully fit and ready to make an impact at the top level.

Blizard started her journey at Rossmoyne where she first played in the Under 12s back in 2017. After 25 games in two seasons, Blizard then fell under the Willetton/Rossmoyne club and eventually just Willetton over the coming years. She would play up a couple of years in 2021, running out in the Year 9/10 group when still eligible for the 7/8 age bracket.

In the West Australian National Development Championships of 2022, Blizard caught the eye for Team Gold with a nice turn of speed and finding her fair share of the ball with 15 touches, two marks, six tackles, four inside 50s and three rebound 50s even playing through the middle in one of the game. She would go on to also represented the Woomeras against the Medleys at the National Diversity Games, and begin her career at East Fremantle.

Across seven Rogers Cup matches, Blizard booted 12 goals as a 14-year-old showing great promise coming through the ranks. A further 11 games and five goals in 2023 followed, with the double bottom-ager representing the Sandgropers at the National Development Championships against Vic Country and South Australia and was named in the Under 16s All-Australian team in the forward pocket.

Given the strength of East Fremantle’s WAFLW side, Blizard was made to bide her time and make her League debut in Round 12 of 2024 having spent the first nine games of the season in the Sharks’ Rogers Cup lineup. A jaw-dropping three goals on debut was sensational, and she held her place in the team, playing a further six games including the grand final defeat at the hands of Claremont where Blizard kicked a major.

Her form through the National Championships with five goals from three games earned her a place in the AFLW Under 17 Futures game at GMHBA Stadium where she lit up the forward 50 with a couple of goals and was later named in the AFLW National Academy.

In 2025, Blizard averaged 9.8 disposals, 2.0 marks and 2.8 inside 50s for Western Australia, also kicking a couple of goals. Though not quite as prolific as her bottom-age championships, the athletic tall still showed plenty of promise and excitement around the big sticks.

STRENGTHS:

+ Defensive pressure
+ Athleticism
+ Forward craft
+ X-factor
+ Speed
+ Scoreboard impact
+ Upside

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Overhead marking
- Strength
- Consistency

The East Fremantle draft prospect's key point of difference compared to a lot of tall forwards is her defensive pressure. While not always credited with tackles as such, her implied pressure and work rate to shut down opposition defenders and force turnovers is invaluable to her side. At times she does the role of a smaller forward better than a taller one, and that athleticism aids in her running down players.

Over the years, Blizard has settled into life as a tall forward, though at 174cm and with her outstanding athleticism, the West Australian could very easily play on any line. Her forward craft and general goal sense is outstanding, and she oozes X-factor that will always attract attention.

When working up the ground, Blizard is able to go on searching leads, and then add an extra number to a contest between the arcs. At ground level, the East Fremantle talent is clever at winning the ball and quickly dishing off, and while still a little raw in some areas, it only adds to her upside and further development at an elite level.

Blizard's tenacious defensive pressure is terrific considering she is a lighter build forward compared to others, so can go a step further and build additional strength to compete in one-on-ones more consistently and be a greater aerial threat.

Her overhead marking is a key deficiency in her game, with Blizard able to mark the ball, but mostly off the chest or uncontested more so than at the highest point. One of the tricky elements to master when you're hitting leads at speed or are lighter compared to your opponents, no doubt that is one area the East Fremantle player will develop at the next level.

Blizard is a tricky one to try and predict where she might land in the AFLW Draft, because she obviously has enormous talent and clubs will look to her as one that can significantly develop. She has areas she will need to build up, but her upside and foundational traits such as her athleticism and defensive pressure are big ricks in her favour.

It is tipped she will likely be that more stay-at-home forward when reaching the top grade, before eventually developing into a roaming forward who can play as that link between the midfield and forward. A long-term prospect, Blizard is certainly one with no shortage of highlights, and can be as damaging as anyone close to goal.

DRAFT RANGE: 25-40

SUMMARY:

Alicia Blizard is likely to fall among that second round log-jam, with her upside and defensive pressure a couple of key ticks in her favour. It would not be unheard of for a club to pounce slightly earlier than the draft range above, but she should find a home somewhere through the draft.
