SNAPSHOT:

Amber Swan is one of a number of Queenslanders in the frame to be drafted this year after receiving a 2023 AFLW Draft Combine. Boasting a balance of speed and defensive pressure around the stoppages, while she is still improving her decision making and upping her production rate, the Maroochydore prospect caught the eye of recruiters for the future.

STRENGTHS:

+ Defensive pressure
+ Contested work
+ Clearances
+ Ground balls
+ Upside

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Decision making
- Footy IQ
- Production

PROFILE:

Swan's numbers throughout the 2023 season do not jump off the page, which just goes to show what the Queensland teenager offers on-field outside sheer statistics. Her speed on the inside or outside, coupled with a natural ability to go in hard and win the contested ball or feed it out to a teammate is what has endeared her to coaches and recruiters alike.

Swan has played at Maroochydore across her teenage years and worked her way up to the Under 18s Lions Academy, and eventually the Maroons' state side. An ankle injury did threaten to hamper her year, but fortunately for the top-ager, she was still able to play two Talent League Girls matches, as well as all three AFLW Under 18 Championships contests.

For the Lions, she averaged 90 disposals, 4.5 tackles and 4.0 inside 50s, working hard at the coalface and pumping the ball inside 50. She showed when given that opportunity she can move the ball well and is not afraid to put her body on the line. When she stepped up to Queensland duties, she shared the midfield role and had the 5.0 disposals and 3.3 tackles per game as the Maroons went 2-1 across the carnival.

Though those numbers could lift, it is what Swan does both with and without the ball. In a general sense, Swan is clean with ball-in-hand, good at ground level and can win both clearances and one-on-one contests. Though not an aerial player, once the ball hits the deck, she will do anything to claim the ball and give it off to a teammate or put it to space where they can run onto it.

By her own admission, her decision making - particularly by foot - and her footy IQ - particularly positioning - are areas she is working on as it stands. Swan is a see-ball, get-ball player, and with that mix of defensive attitude and athletic attributes, it is all about upside for the teenager.

If drafted, Swan would likely play as more of a defensive forward to start with, before rolling into midfield rotations. She might not have some of the plaudits of others, but works hard and is clean, which goes a long way into AFLW clubs thinking.

SUMMARY:

Amber Swan is a homegrown Sunshine Coast player out of the Lions Academy and would love to step up and represent the side. However given the competitive nature and the talent within Queensland, she is someone willing to go wherever it takes for her chance, and getting a Draft Combine invitation shows there is some interest in the midfielder.
