SNAPSHOT: “An deceptively tough all-round power athlete with slick skills and great versatility.”
Those in the Dandenong Stingrays program have long held high hopes for Andrio Sousa. It’s fair to say the breakout prospect has repaid that faith in 2026. After a hot start in Round 1, Sousa had his progress halted by a broken arm but returned in Round 8 and never looked back.
His early glimpses were enough to earn Vic Country selection, where the dynamic outside runner played all four games as a wingman and forward. He went on to rack up a total of 12 Talent League appearances with the Stingrays and was among their best in a Grand Final defeat.
The freakish, all-round athleticism of Sousa shone at the National Draft Combine. He achieved top-10 results across a high of four events, with his best finish coming in the 20-metre sprint – 2.902 seconds, good enough for fourth. Speed and agility have been central to his success on-field.
Sousa hails from strong Portuguese heritage. His father was born overseas along with both of his mother’s parents. Catholicism has been a big part of his cultural upbringing, with the 18-year-old crediting faith for his resilience. He looks up to Geelong’s Ollie Dempsey, who has also spoken of his religious journey.
STRENGTHS:
+ Agility
+ Clean hands
+ Defensive pressure
+ Speed
+ Vertical leap
+ Versatility
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Contested game
- Endurance
As the modern game requires, Sousa plays at a high speed and blends his athleticism with cunning ball use. He's the type of player who loves to take the game on and doesn't have to force the issue, with his top traits being conducive to an attacking game style. The transition game is where he thrives.
Sousa sees himself as a natural wingman who can use the expanses to showcase his pace and hurt the opposition. In that role, he connects the lines brilliantly by driving his legs and bringing the play forward. While capable of folding into the contest, he holds his width well and provides spurts of energy on the outside.
That kind of play is also suitable to the high forward role, where Sousa can work up the ground and use his speed on the way back to goal. Although, by his own admission, he'll need to elevate his endurance base in order to play the same way at AFL level. His repeat sprint efforts are dangerous, but need to be consistent.
Along with the usual wing/forward rotation, Sousa shone when unleashed in midfield. He's deceptively competitive and tough, able to fight for the loose ball and apply pressure or put his body on the line aerially. His ability to win possession and drive from in to out caught the eye, exiting congestion with quick gear shifts.
Sousa's quick and clean hands are complimented by daring decisions by foot. While prone to being slightly erratic at times, he can combine his athleticism and skills to deal compound damage to the opposition. His strength is doing so on the outside, but he has done well to elevate his contested work when challenged this year.
DRAFT RANGE: 25-40
SUMMARY:
Sousa’s athletic profile, tenacious nature and ability to put speed on the ball make him very much suited to modern football. He knows what he has to work on in order to nail down a role at the top level, namely his endurance, and clearly has the talent to impact games. Recruiters immediately noticed that talent this year and have kept a close eye. His name then went up in lights after a strong end to the year and blistering combine results. He has the potential to play an Ollie Dempsey kind of role and is a player who will likely draw fans in. On upside, he could sneak into the back of an extended first round come draft time.
