SNAPSHOT:“A tough midfielder who expanded her game in 2025, boasting clean skills and high footy IQ.”

Annabelle Foat is a Gold Coast junior through and through, coming through the likes of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach Football Clubs over the years. In 2022, Foat played through both the Under 15s and Under 17s at Broadbeach Cats at 15 years of age, while also representing the stacked Gold Coast Suns Academy at the AFLW Under 16 Championships as a bottom-ager.

A year later, she was back in Suns colours not just for the National Development Championships, but also in the Coates Talent League Girls competition, where she played a couple of games averaging 6.5 disposals and 3.5 tackles. While other double-bottom agers took the limelight – the current top-age crop – Foat showed she belonged and was able to return to play a key role in 2024.

As that inside midfielder who also spent time forward, Foat averaged 19.0 disposals and 4.0 tackles at the Under 18 Championships as a bottom-ager, having played all four games for the Suns Academy at Talent League level. With a host of top-agers out of the side in 2025, Foat was able to play a key role around the ball, but also gain an important apprenticeship down back where her competitiveness and footy IQ came to the fore.

Foat averaged 18.3 disposals, 2.3 marks and 5.3 tackles this year for the Suns Academy, before predominantly shuffling behind the ball when not in the middle for Queensland at the 2025 AFLW Under 18 Championships. Still a smart ball winner around the stoppage, given the high volume of midfielders, learning a secondary position in defence aided Foat in further strengthening her case.

STRENGTHS:

+ Skills
+ Footy IQ
+ Endurance
+ Strength
+ Defensive pressure

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Speed
- Outside game

Gold Coast Suns Academy and Queensland as a whole have had a number of key players injured over the last couple of seasons, but one who has been there throughout is the infallible Foat. Predominantly playing as an inside midfielder over the journey, she was given the opportunity to first play as a half-forward, then found a spot down back.

While Foat's preferred position is on the inside, given the raft and depth of midfield options both through the draft and at AFLW level, it is more likely she will find her place as either a defender or forward with rotating minutes on-ball. When around the coalface, Foat's strength and clean hands come into play, with neat skills and smarts to dispose of the ball effectively.

Without the ball, Foat's defensive pressure is just as high, able to apply repeat one percenters and do all the team things to support her fellow midfielders. She can win clearances, but Foat is best at feeding the ball to others who can then burst away and send it forward. A natural first-possession winner, playing that role when on the inside reduces the need to use her leg speed which is her main area of improvement.

Even around the ground, while Foat can use the ball effectively by hand or foot, more often than not she looks to find teammates in better positions quickly, and opens up the game that way. She won't be that high metres gained player, and is more effective on the inside, but she brings natural footballing traits to teh table.

Foat's endurance base is high, and she can run out games well, so is more likely to work over opponents across the course of four quarters. If she can continue to develop the outside elements in her game, then Foat can further enhance her impact and be a versatile option at the top level.

DRAFT RANGE: Late

Given Gold Coast Academy’s plethora of AFLW Draft options – and even one more now that Sunny Lappin has declared for the Suns – Foat is one of a number of players who are in the mix, but are definitely gettable by other AFLW clubs. She has traits to reach the top level, and it will be whether or not she fits a need within a certain club.  It is expected if she lands at her home club it will likely be with one of late selections as we have seen in recent times.
