SNAPSHOT: “An explosive and strong half-forward who can also play on-ball with great upside.”
Ashleigh Thatcher is one of those players who would not look out of place at national championships level even though she did not get the opportunity in 2025. A hard-running contested ball-winning talent who linked up Eastern Ranges’ play between midfield and attack, the high half-forward showed enough traits throughout the Coates Talent League Girls season to earn a State Draft Combine invite.
Thatcher’s journey started out at Endeavour Hills in the South East Juniors where she progressed through despite missing the 2020 season due to the global pandemic. A tally of 21 goals in 12 games for what was her second season – and first in the Under 14s – was promising, and then advanced to the Under 16s a year later.
While 2023 would usually mark making Vic Metro Under 16s teams, Thatcher was a late bloomer, crossing to Wantirna South where she played 17 games as 16-year-old, including two in the Under 18s and even a Division 4 senior debut.
Even by 2024 in what was essentially her bottom-age season, Thatcher was working hard at local footy, slamming home 28 goals in 16 games including a three-game purple patch of 14 goals. Her side would end up reaching a grand final, but ultimately suffered a six-goal defeat to North Ringwood. Thatcher would kick a major on the day.
Her form throughout the season had earned enough for Eastern Ranges to be convinced, with Thatcher able to earn a spot in the Talent League Girls squad for the 2025 season. Making the most of lost time, the half-forward was able to lockdown a spot in that role, while also playing midfield in the absence of a stack of Vic Metro representatives.
Thatcher finished the season averaging 12.9 disposals, 1.9 marks, 3.4 tackles, 1.4 clearances and 2.7 inside 50s, while also booting three majors across her 15 games. Though she did miss out of Metro representation, Thatcher would win a flag with the Ranges, and go on to earn a State Draft Combine invitation where she could show off her athletic gifts.

IMPROVEMENTS:
- Decision making
- Composure
- Four-quarter consistency
A powerful athlete, Thatcher's ability to find the ball and retain possession is build off the back of a hunger to win it, and the strength-speed combination to break away and keep it moving downfield. The Eastern Ranges talent showed plenty of that throughout 2025 in that high half-forward role. She is a terrific link-up player who bursts into space to mark then turn and kick inside 50 to leading targets.
She might have only kicked the few goals as predominantly a forward, but Thatcher's best work was not done close to the big sticks, but more so outside 50. She was not necessarily a massive production player, but she did bob up here and there which no doubt made recruiters take note, because she has some of those traits that tick boxes.
Looking at her athletic profile, Thatcher has explosive speed which she can build up quickly, arch the back and look to breakaway from would-be tacklers. That can be a double-edge sword at times as she could tend to blaze away and put unneeded pressure on herself when she could have had greater composure, but when she did get free, it looked very good.
A natural contested player, Thatcher has that see-ball, get-ball attitude, with some great defensive attributes as well. She is generally clean by hand and her kicking technique is terrific when having any sort of time to dispose of the ball. Importantly, Thatcher has grown up using both sides of her body, so her left is not a deficiency compared to many other players.
Once she has the ball, her kicking itself is reliable, but the improvement area - which she has identified as well - is not blazing away and just rushing the kick or putting the ball to an outnumber against her side. She knows where the most dangerous spots to kick going forward are, but at times she would look on that 45 or go deep to a hotspot, but the opposition defence was set up, or read the play and intercepted.
Thatcher is at her best work when she is on the move, can lower the eyes and pick out a loose player inside 50. She can be ultra-damaging and clearly based on what she has shown from limited exposure at the sub-elite junior level, has the ability to build on her performance and take her game further.
While the forward-midfielder does not quite have the runs on the board as others, her season - particularly later in the year once she had adapted - really stood out amongst those beyond Victorian representation. If a club can build on her foundational traits, Thatcher can play a role at the elite level.
DRAFT RANGE: Late
SUMMARY:
Ashleigh Thatcher is a promising player who has the talent to play AFLW, it is just piecing all the parts of her game together consistently, and working on her decision making and composure going forward. She is more likely to be a chance of being drafted in the second half if this year, but if not, then she has the potential to be a name that continues to pop up in draft circles over the next few seasons.
