Summary
SNAPSHOT: “Despite missing the last two seasons due to injury, Ava Usher is considered the universal best prospect with an array of weapons that few players in history have possessed.”
Like players such as Ash Centra, Havana Harris and Zippy Fish before her, Ava Usher is a talent who has the potential to bring crowds wherever she plays. With a rare combination of just about every weapon and trick in the book, it is not unreasonable to suggest she is the most complete player to have come through the junior girls pathway.
Usher comes from a multi-sport background and she herself says, she loves to keep “busy”. A fitness fanatic who runs and swims multiple times a week on top of her training, no one can question her dedication to the craft. She was earmarked as the ‘next big thing’ from a long way out, and once she reached the Under 16s Suns Academy, it was clear there was a special talent on Gold Coast’s hands.
The potential top pick was part of a stacked Queensland side that won the 15 and Under Girls title at the School Sport Australia Championships back in July, 2022. Boasting a range of names who will fill out the first round of this year’s AFLW Draft – including seven All-Australians from that carnival – Usher then progressed into the Under 16s Academy and was among the best best against Brisbane Lions in those two matches.
Even at that stage, Usher was boasting traits similar to Charlie Rowbottom, and with the exception of perhaps her kicking, everything else was looking far above the level. Returning to play in the Under 16s Championships in 2023, Usher had gone to work and suddenly her kicking was a weapon, and the transformation over the off-season was as scary for opponents as it was impressive.
Usher would go on to win the Under 16s Pool B Best and Fairest, named in the All-Australian team midfield alongside Mia Russo and Sophie Eaton. By the end of 2023, Usher had debuted for Queensland at Under 18s level and provided some blistering highlights, and won a flag for Bond University, booting three goals in the grand final as teammate Havana Harris went on to win best afield honours.
Entering her bottom-age season, the hype around Usher has grown astronomically. Queensland looked unstoppable, but then March 7 came along and an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in her left knee ended any chance of a return in 2024. Another setback – more precautionary than anything – in April this year meant Usher sat out the remainder of 2025 too, with that 2023 QAFLW Grand Final being her last state league or national championships match.
Despite the disappointment of missing her most recent two years, Usher is very much not only in the draft frame, but at the very top of the tree, with few – if any – likely to disagree she is the standout prospect in this year’s crop. While “grateful” to be even talked about, Usher’s skillset and upside is something special, and when you see her highlights or gameplay, you become a believer too.

STRENGTHS:
+ Explosiveness
+ Strength
+ Contested work
+ Athleticism
+ Hurt factor
+ Footy IQ
+ Penetrating kick
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Continuity
- Kicking at speed
It is difficult to even know where to begin when it comes to Usher's draft profile, but taking a look at her athletic qualities, it is easy to see that she has such a well-rounded power-based game that enables her to impact be it in the middle or when resting forward. Usually players burst through tackles with either strength or speed, and Usher has both which makes her incredibly difficult to bring down without her firing away a clean disposal, or leaving the opponent wondering what had hit them.
When in traffic, Usher is more than capable of weaving out of it, with her spacial awareness to spin one way then the other and find the smallest of gaps to fit through and then break out into space is just unheard of through the earlier years of the junior women's football. The difference between Usher and many others before her is she never panics, and even when confronted by two, three or four opponents, usually just dances around then or draws them and releases to the player who she she has freed up.
That footy IQ is the element Usher has said has improved rapidly over the last two seasons, getting a great understanding of a coaches eye view working with the Queensland side during the national championships. Her positioning around stoppages and getting into more dangerous spots around the ground is what she felt she has developed in her time off, and if that picks her up another five to 10 touches per game, then watch out.
As mentioned prior, her kicking as a 15-year-old was an area of improvement, but by her 16th year, she had turned it into a weapon. Still developing that kick at speed, she would still be above average in that area, and even have a few highlights to attest to the fact. But for Usher, anything that is not perfect, can be improved.
The big question mark will be how she returns after two years out of the game, and clearly the concern around a repeat injury. Too often we see ACL victims go down again, but at least with Usher, having the extra time off means additional recovery and making sure she is more than 100 per cent ready to go. If she does not end up playing in a state league competition prior to the AFLW, it will mean 29 months out of competitive action which will come with associated rust.
Usher is the kind of player and person who will leave no stone unturned to make sure it is like she was never out, but the expectations should be tempered early days. Aside from the question marks around that, she has few to no holes in her game, which is why we regard her as the best junior girl to come through the pathways.
Her athleticism, compared with her footballing abilities is so unique that she ticks the most boxes of any player yet. Usher can impact on the inside, outside, in the air, ground level, set up goals and kick them too. To give a taste of what she is capable of, at 16, Usher won the ball at the back of a stoppage just inside 50 then launched off a couple of steps from range to clear the goalline. Another, she worked it from half-back to half-forward, evading four Vic Country opponents to hit at teammate lace-out inside 50 during her Under 18s National Championships campaign.
Essentially, Usher is a special talent, and while there will naturally be that rustiness to kick off when she gets going, once she gets going, watch out. The Queenslander is a game-changer who has rare ability and will be a star for a very long time at the elite level.
DRAFT RANGE: 1-3
Ava Usher is the standout prospect in the AFLW Draft crop. With Gold Coast securing the wooden spoon, barring any trades to split pick one, it will likely mean the Suns match a bid at pick two. However they could end up splitting and just picking her given the amount of players they need to pickup at this year’s AFLW Draft. There is still a question over whether she opts to follow the Academy ties, or goes into the open draft, and if it is the latter, then the value on pick one will see some ridiculous offers forwarded to the Suns.
