+ Scoreboard impact
+ Defensive pressure
+ Clean hands
Every year hard luck stories from missing out on the draft determine that a change of scenery could alter their fortunes, and that was certainly the plan for Baynen Lowe. Like many fellow Tasmanians of late, Lowe headed west to the SANFL where he teamed up with Norwood after missing out on being selected in his top-age year. Though Lowe had a consistent 2021 season with the Tasmania Devils, his size was not ideal for his preferred midfield position.
In heading to the Redlegs, Lowe developed into a small forward, where he became a potent goalkicker in the League side, averaging 1.4 goals per game on his way to a SANFL flag. Not only did he boot 25 goals in 18 games, but he slotted four majors in a outstanding 11-point upset win over Adelaide in the Preliminary Final. Without a doubt, Lowe's strengths are a balance between his offensive ability to hit the scoreboard, and his defensive traits.
Lowe is not a super athletic small forward, blessed with explosive speed or incredible agility, but he does have toughness and the smarts to evade opponents. While some clubs may be looking for the more athletic type, Lowe is one who can still impact games in a variety of ways without necessarily burning off opponents. A rare, readymade small forward.
