Summary
SNAPSHOT: “Boasting elite stoppage craft and footy IQ, D’Addario shook off an injury interrupted couple of seasons to have an ultra-consistent top-age year.”
Carys D’Addario is a readymade AFLW player who has long been touted as one to watch in West Australian pathways. A tried and true inside midfielder, D’Addario has not been without her injury interruptions at times, but put that behind her in 2025 to produce a consistent full season and fly up draft boards.
The West Coast supporter quickly established herself as a player to watch from early on in the year. Her first month at WAFL Women’s level for Swan Districts saw the big-bodied midfielder average 26 touches and 4.8 marks per match. She would go on to finish the year with a 24-disposal average, all while laying 6.3 tackles per match.
On top of those averages, D’Addario stepped up on the biggest stage, booting the first goal of the preliminary final as her Swans upset the second placed Subiaco to reach a grand final, and was one of the best afield in the deciding loss to Claremont. Across her three finals, D’Addario had 26, 26 and 25 disposals, while laying an average of six tackles per match. It did not matter what level the pressure rose to, D’Addario was up to the challenge.
That form in between at the national championships was potentially even better. Back up against her peers, D’Addario was a force through the middle, and finished equal fifth overall in the best and fairest at the national championships, while winning Western Australia’s MVP.
It was a just reward for D’Addario who had craved continuity after missing both the Under 16s and bottom-age Under 18s championships due to injury, and when given her chance, she excelled. While Western Australia have no shortage of draft prospects this season, D’Addario has thrown her hat in the ring to be yet another first rounder from the Sandgropers and it is not hard to see why given her draft profile.

STRENGTHS:
+ Stoppage craft
+ Contested work
+ Kicking
+ Decision making
+ Clean hands
+ Strength
+ Defensive pressure
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Explosive speed
- Agility
In an era when so many players have similar traits and it is incredibly difficult to standout, D'Addario's stoppage craft is what really sets herself apart from her peers. Her reading of the play off hands is simply elite, and she would just about be the first picked midfielder in this year's draft to stand at an opening centre bounce. So often she will read exactly where the tap is going, and before her opponent has even clicked, D'Addario is clearing the ball forward.
It is her bread and butter, and while some midfielders have that aspect they can improve, she is already at an AFLW level. She has even gone head-to-head with AFLW players and beaten them, such is her high footy IQ. But the best attached trait to that is the fact that she is not just a player who can win the ball and bomb it forward. She also has the wherewithal to lower the eyes and hit targets forward of centre.
D'Addario's vision and expertise in delivering the ball inside 50 is another strength of hers, and even if she doesn't hit a target, she will almost always put it to her teammate's advantage. Throughout the WAFLW finals series, D'Addario consistently set up goals with her vision and execution, especially in the preliminary final where her no less than three goal assists - along with her major - turned the game in her side's favour.
As a whole, D'Addario's contest work is right up there with the best, both at ground level with clean hands, and her strength to extract the ball from congestion. She stands up in tackles, can shrug off opponents with her power, but when the shoe is on the other foot, lays some bone-crunching tackles. Her defensive numbers are up there with the best, so the Swan Districts talent is a true two-way runner.
Speaking of running, D'Addario's endurance is an area that has improved over the course of the season having had so many interruptions in the past. From an athletic point of view, she can still improve her apeed and agility, lacking that explosiveness that other midfielders have at times. However, given her strength and elite footy IQ, it doesn't hamper her at the coalface because she reads it exceptionally well and can execute under immense pressure.
A lot of time is spent talking about ceilings, and while D'Addario is closer to her ceiling than most, her floor (worst performance) is as high as anyone's. Essentially, her consistency and reliability gives coaches certainty around what she will produce for whichever side she is representing.
As a whole, D'Addario is as strong and safe of a selection as anyone else in the AFLW Draft, and with just one game under 20 disposals in the WAFLW this season, she has proven herself against senior bodies. For a club looking at a readymade midfielder, the West Australian prospect is an easy choice to make.
DRAFT RANGE: 10-20
Carys D’Addario has bolted into first round contention and for a club desperate for a readymade, clever, clearance midfielder, it would not be a shock to see the Swan Districts talent picked up in the middle of that round. With a proven CV, the West Australian could viably play Round 1 in the centre square, which for a lot of the lower ranked teams, would be a brilliant addition.
