It's fair to say Charlie Banfield has giant shoes to fill. The 192cm utility is the son of 1992 pick one and dual West Coast premiership player, Drew, tying him to the Eagles. His sparkling end to the season has him poised to follow in his father's footsteps, having already played two WAFL League games for the Eagles. Better yet, Banfield junior was best afield as Claremont took out a third consecutive Colts flag.

With an average of 26.8 disposals in four finals appearances, Banfield saved his best form for last. He exhibited great versatility throughout the season to mostly cut his teeth as a wingman and forward, before thriving on a move into midfield. There, his competitiveness and sheer work rate came to the fore, utilising his strong frame to extract possession in imposing fashion. His scrappy nature and courage also lend to terrific overhead marking craft.

Banfield took out the 2km time trial at the recent WA state combine with a time of 6:08, putting him up with the best of this year's crop. He can still work on his speed to match that endurance, while polish is another area for refinement. Banfield tends to be a crash-and-bash type, but certainly possesses a wide range of traits which suit current day AFL football. The Eagles have him, and a good array of NGA graduates to consider.
