Summary

SNAPSHOT: “A late call-up to the AFLW State Draft Combine, O’Connor Moreira had a ripping end to the year running off the wing for Western Jets.”
Charlie O’Connor Moreira was a surprise inclusion to the AFLW State Draft Combine. Not in the fact that she had not earned it – her late season form was fantastic – but in the way that it came out of left field and gave others in the Coates Talent League Girls hope that missing the initial round of nominations was not the be all and end all.
The Western Jets winger is no stranger to football, having started as part of the Western Bulldogs region for Point Cook in the Western Football Netball League back in 2018. Since then, she has notched up 100 games and kicked plenty of goals along the way. Even as a 11-year-old in 2019, O’Connor Moreira scored a game in the Under 15s, and though she missed 2020 due to a global pandemic, returned to switch to Altona in 2021.
At Under 14s level she quite simply dominated, named in the best in every game and booted 25 goals in nine games, stepping up to the Under 16s and representing the competition at interleague. That continued in 2022, and by 2023, she was kicking goals for fun with 36 from 17 games as a 15-year-old in the Under 18.5s competition. O’Connor Moreira would end up also playing for Point Cook again before moving to Williamstown CYMS in 2025.
It was in her bottom-age season (2024) where O’Connor Moreira started to make inroads towards the elite junior level, picked by the Western Jets and running out for nine games in a wing role. Though she did not kick a goal last season, it held her in good stead to go to another level in 2025. Boosting her averages across the board with 8.1 more disposals, 2.0 more marks, 2.6 more inside 50s and 1.0 more rebound 50s, O’Connor Moreira quickly bolted into AFLW Draft contention.
Few outside of the Vic Metro squad earn a Draft Combine invite, and though she initially missed out, gained a late entry and went to work. Despite playing all of her junior career as a forward at local level, O’Connor Moreira honed in on that wing role and it paid dividends with some explosive, eye-catching plays in the second half of the season.

STRENGTHS:
+ Explosive speed
+ Defensive pressure
+ Physicality
+ Run-and-carry
+ Work rate
+ Outside game
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Kicking efficiency
- Endurance
- Inside game
Perhaps the most impressive aspect for O'Connor Moreira's rise in her top-age season was the fact she was delayed by an early season injury. Her first match came on May 10 for Williamstown CYMS Reserves and after four games she was recalled to the Western Jets where the winger would play nine matches for the season.
What stands out in O'Connor Moreira's game is her ability to work hard into space, find the uncontested ball and then burst away to break lines and put pressure on the opposition defence. As a winger, O'Connor Moreira is a defensively-minded prospect who does not shy away from the physicality aspect of football and in fact thrives on it, giving as good as she gets.
Though not a big-bodied player by any means, O'Connor Moreira is a similar player to Collingwood's Violet Patterson in the sense that she might be lightly built, but her physicality pound-for-pound is up there with the very best. It is a point of difference compared to most wingers or outside prospects, but is the way the game is going with those types expected to apply more defensive pressure than ever before.
Her two-way ability to run-down opponents then take off and break lines before delivering inside 50 really catches the eye. O'Connor Moreira is far from the finished product because she is developing some of her fundamentals, most notably her kicking. For a predominant outside player, the Western Jets winger could be more efficient with ball in hand, but it comes back to what clubs are after and whether or not a non pinpoint pass is covered by the fact it has travelled 50 metres up the field.
Along with her kicking, O'Connor Moreira can still develop more of an inside game as she has been that forward-turned winger. Given her explosive speed and physicality, her traits lend themselves to that element and she is one who with time, could develop it if need be. She can tend to push up to add an extra number at the contest, but does her best work in space to drive the ball forward.
The benefit with O'Connor Moreira being able to test at the Draft Combine is the fact she is very well equipped in her athletic profile. Only just above a 3.2-second 20m sprint, the Western Jets winger is lightning on the field, and in the physical testing space. She also did well in her agility testing and running verticals.
One further improvement is her endurance, which might be a little strange for a winger given the amount of ground she covers, but is an area that can further improve. O'Connor Moreira tends to have bursts where she can impact games and by building an even bigger tank, will be able to influence for longer periods of time.
As a while, O'Connor Moreira's fantastic end to her top-age campaign put her in the AFLW Draft frame and there is still plenty to build on going forward as well.
DRAFT RANGE: Late
SUMMARY:
Charlie O’Connor Moreira is a late bloomer, having transformed from being a forward to a winger the past two seasons, and in particular her second half of the 2025 season was outstanding. Now after being invited to the AFLW State Draft Combine, she is a possible chance to reach the elite level.
