SNAPSHOT: “A resolute and reliable key defender capable of cutting off opposition attacks and shutting down dangerous opponents.” – Denholm Melrose

Quiet achiever Clancy Dennis is one of the top key defenders in the 2024 draft class, proving he belongs in the conversation among the best with his selection in the AFL Under 18 All-Australian team following the National Championships. One of only two Western Australians in the side along with captain and midfielder Bo Allan, Dennis was resolute down back this season and consistently played his role in shutting down opponents. Upon returning to Claremont in the latter half of the WAFL Colts season, Dennis played a pivotal role in the Tiger’s premiership campaign.

PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:

STRENGTHS:

+ Consistency
+ Intercept marking
+ Leadership
+ One-on-ones
+ Rebounding
+ Versatility

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Decision making
- Vision

Dennis has a no holds barred mentality and shows it consistently wherever he plays. He fights mightily one-on-one against opponents, often taller than him, to maintain positions of strength and spoil or intercept mark. Dennis is highly skilled at shifting his direct opponent under the ball or off their line to put himself in a position to outmark them. Across the National Championships he was tasked with playing on some of the best key forward talent in the country and stood tall, rarely being beaten on his way to All-Australian honours.

One of Dennis’ biggest assets is that, at 194cm, he is still quick and agile enough to carry the ball and is often the defender to break lines and drive his side forward. A skillset that encompasses the ability to defend key forwards while also being able to attack and rebound is one that is not often discovered.

Dennis also possesses great leadership qualities. He is vocal in the back six, directing teammates on where to position themselves behind the ball and ferocious in his demands for teammates to perform their roles. What makes it better is that the aggression and ferocity that Dennis plays with rubs off on teammates and improves the entire defensive unit.

Another aspect of Dennis’ game is his versatility. As a bottom-ager he was played as a ruckman, averaging nearly 19 hitouts per game, and while he spent the majority of 2024 in the backline, he is more than capable of going forward and taking contested marks there, too.

Dennis has excellent running patterns, paired with strong endurance and stamina, so he can contribute across four quarters of football, on ventures forward and in his staunch defensive efforts. His ability to recover quickly and apply second efforts is applaudable. In 13 WAFL Colts games this season, Dennis averaged 16 disposals and over six marks per game.

DRAFT RANGE: 40-60

SUMMARY:

Due to the deep nature of this year’s cohort, there is no clear indication of what range Dennis lies in, but his All-Australian selection and versatile skillset at a position of need for many clubs makes him an interesting prospect, who should see himself taken in November’s draft. A bunch of key position prospects, mostly forwards, are grouped around the second round block, so Dennis could well sneak in there or feature thereafter.
