SNAPSHOT: “A nifty smaller type with neat skills and a clean set of heels, Cody Angove is another option for clubs looking to add a touch of class in the front half.” – Charlie McCormack

One of six Claremont prospects to clinch a national combine invite, Cody Angove is a speedy half-forward who has produced consistent form across two seasons to firm his name as a draftable prospect.

Having missed selection at Under 16s level for Western Australia, Angove compiled an excellent bottom-age season in a strong Claremont side. He played all bar one game and earned WAFL Team of the Year honours in a campaign that saw him average 14.5 disposals and over a goal per game.

An injury interrupted start to 2024 saw Angove miss the opening two Colts games, but after a modest start, he built into the season nicely and was an effective player for the Sandgropers at the Under 18 National Championships, producing some eye-catching moments across a wing and half-forward.

Angove returned to the Claremont Colts and flourished in the back half of the season, averaging over 21 disposals and a goal per game in a six-week block heading into finals.

Amongst a stacked Tigers side come finals, Angove played his role in helping Claremont to back-to-back premierships, becoming a dual flag-winner and completing a very successful junior career.

PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:

STRENGTHS:

+ Agility
+ Ball use
+ Finishing
+ Footy IQ
+ Outside game
+ Running capacity

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Contested work
- Size

A clever player with good skills, it is no surprise that Angove does his best work with ball in hand. In a similar vein to Claremont teammate Will Hayes, Angove is a terrific link player, and is often the catalyst for setting up several of his side’s scoring chains. He is a lovely user of the football and a good exponent of the ‘money kick’, often lowering the eyes and able to find a target inside 50.

The 18-year-old has a great combination of speed and endurance. He is a lively presence around the football, and it is customary to see him zipping in and out of traffic and using his excellent agility to sidestep opponents and find space in tight confines. He also has a good engine which allows him to roam up the ground as a half-forward before working back to goal and impacting the play offensively. At his best, he is a player who can work back into his defensive half to help create a turnover, before using run-and-carry to generate a forward entry for his side.

Closer to goal, Angove is a dangerous player at ground level and has kicked numerous crumbing goals across his career, either roving from a marking contest or pouncing on a loose ball before accelerating away. He is also a sound finisher, particularly when snapping or arcing onto his preferred right foot.

If Angove’s best traits could be captured in a singular play, his third-quarter goal in the National Championships against the Allies is a good illustration. Playing on the wing at the time, he drifted goalside of his opponent to gather a loose ball 65m out, before arching his back to stride away and finish on the run from just inside the 50.

In terms of improvement areas, Angove is still quite raw from a physical perspective and would likely require a season or two of development at state-league level to acclimatise to the rigours of senior football. A strong outside player, Angove will also look to continue to refine his contested work and aerial ability, particularly when he begins to play on more seasoned defenders at senior level.

DRAFT RANGE: Late/Rookie

SUMMARY:

While he shapes as a longer-term prospect, Angove is a natural footballer who has enough traits in his class, smarts and strong running ability to carve out a career at the next level. He draws some similarities to a young Luke Breust, as a lightly framed talent with good forward craft, and shapes as a sound option for clubs looking to bolster their front-half stocks in the later rounds.
