SNAPSHOT: “A developing tall back from the Top End, McDonald looms as her region’s top AFLW Draft prospect.”

Danika McDonald is a name out of the Northern Territory who has taking her opportunities with both hands and improved rapidly throughout the last couple of seasons. A draft prospect out of Alice Springs, McDonald has spent time honing her craft across the country, having played in multiple competitions and representatives teams.

McDonald began her journey through the NTFL Women’s Under 12s competition with Darwin Buffettes and then moved to Wanderers for the Under 15s competition in 2020. There, she booted four goals across 13 games showing her potential up the other end of the field from what she would become. She continued her journey at Wanderers in 2021 where she made her Under 18s debut, and then played Under 16s in the Central Australian Football League (CAFL).

Representing Rovers in the CAFL across 14 games that year, McDonald booted 13 goals and was named among the best, while donning the Northern Territory jumper in the Under 17 Futures match despite being just 14. Moving to Pioneer in 2022, McDonald would also play in the National Development Championships as a bottom-ager.

In 2023, McDonald made her Coates Talent League Girls debut with the Thunder Academy, and played Under 16s again at the National Championships. In the Top End, McDonald played with Federal in the CAFL and Darwin in the NTL Women’s Under 16s competition. Switches back to Pioneer and then St Mary’s in the respective leagues a year later also saw McDonald maker her NTFL Premier Division debut.

After being a late inclusion for the Allies in 2024, McDonald was a permanent member from the state for the combined states national championships team, playing all four games and locking down a tall defensive post with 7.5 disposals and 2.0 rebounds per match at the national carnival. The National Academy member looms as the Territory’s top draft prospect in 2025.

STRENGTHS:

+ Kicking
+ Reading the play
+ Intercepting
+ Aerial ability
+ Rate of development
+ Composure

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Endurance
- Contested marking

McDonald might have played up forward at different points, but has really locked down her tall defensive spot over the last two seasons, and it is where she looks the most comfortable and natural. Competitive in the air and a really capable reader of the play, McDonald uses the ball effectively more often than not, and her rate of development over the last 24 months has been very good.

While McDonald was identified as one to watch for the future from the Top End, the Northern Territory talent became more influential in her top-age season which followed on from the two-game Allies stint last year. Clearly a standout for the Northern Territory at Coates Talent League Girls level, McDonald plays her role to a t.

With ball in hand, her kicking is technically sound and her composure with ball-in-hand also works well. From an execution result point of view, her decision making at times could be improved, but most of the time she runs at a fairly high efficiency. McDonald was tasked with a lot of kickouts for the Allies due to both the fluency and length of her kicks from deep in defence, with her capability to spot an option there as well.

Without the ball, McDonald reads the play exceptionally well, and is able to position herself in readiness to intercept. While her biggest improvement footballing wise is her contested marking, she does have good hands when under less pressure, and able to get into teh right spots to bring the ball to ground is very good. A marker more so than a spoiler, McDonald backs herself to take the grab, she is just far more efficient without the additional body contact.

That improvement goes hand-in-hand with a greater focus needed on her endurance, as McDonald will need to build up her tank to compete at the top level. The way she plays deep in defence, having a higher endurance base is not as important, but to match it at the elite grade, she will need to put the work in, particularly against quality and gut-running forwards who would look to work her over.

Going forward, McDonald has the potential to further improve not just in those areas, but in her all-round game, with that decision making to also come with greater exposure to a higher level of football. She did not look out of her depth with the Allies at all and really further staked her claim to earn a chance in the AFL Women's.

DRAFT RANGE: 40-60

SUMMARY:

Danika McDonald is more likely to land somewhere in the back end of the AFLW Draft, with enough traits to suggest she can make the jump up, but still plenty of improvements to come in her game. At her height and athleticism she certainly can influence games across any level, and is one who could continue her rate of development with an elite program preseason under her belt.
