SNAPSHOT: “A freakishly talented athlete and footballer long considered to be the best of the 2026 draft crop.”
Dougie Cochrane ended up making four appearances in 2026, but for a long time before then the question was posed: ‘how is he still the number one when he hasn’t even played a game?’. You only really need to watch him once to figure out why.
The 18-year-old burst onto the scene at Under 16 level back in 2024, taking out the esteemed Kevin Sheehan Medal and state MVP award. It was then that he began to realise a future in football might be possible. Everyone else knew he was destined for big things.
Despite missing the 2025 Under 18 championships through injury, Cochrane went on to earn his SANFL League debut for Central District as a bottom-ager, kicking four goals in a half. He made five appearances for the Bulldogs, who earned a finals berth.
Cochrane is the son of former Port Adelaide and North Melbourne utility Stuart, who played 104 AFL games – not enough for father-son status at either club. But Dougie is tied to the Power via his indigenous heritage, a link which was made concrete late last year.
As part of the Port Adelaide program and National Academy, Cochrane has spent plenty of time at Alberton. Much of that revolved around his rehabilitation from surgery to repair a knee tendinitis issue. He returned to the field in August, turning out four times for the Port Magpies.
Having played each of those games alongside elder brother Tom, the next step for Cochrane is to join his sibling on Port’s senior list. He was duly invited to the National Draft Combine but did not participate in testing – although clubs will already know him well.
STRENGTHS:
+ Aerial ability
+ Athleticism
+ Footy IQ
+ Kicking
+ Upside
+ Versatility
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Durability
- Strength
Superfluous to say for a pick one contender, Cochrane's profile is as exciting as they come. He is a genuine utility; capable of impacting in the air at either end of the ground, a wonderful field kick for his size, and keen to delve further into a future in midfield. Slot him into any role and he'll impact the game.
Cochrane blends athleticism with footballing ability incredibly well. He reads the play quickly both behind and ahead of the ball, then uses his speed to arrive at the contest before leaping high and extending overhead. He also covers the ground effortlessly, boasting great running power and speed for a 196cm unit.
The 18-year-old first caught the eye as an All-Australian defender in 2024, where his intercepting and distributive skills stood out on the representative stage. He settled into a similar role at the back-end of this year, having little trouble finding the ball and even being trusted with kick-in duties ahead of AFL-listed personnel.
In between, Cochrane booted four goals in the first half of his League debut with Central District last year and enjoyed stints in midfield. That part of his game remains relatively untapped, and while he will likely be utilised as a key forward in the long-term, certainly has scope to bring his skillset to the on-ball rotation.
Cochrane's dynamism is credit to his movement, able to gain separation from opponents and thrive both in the air or at ground level. He can do things others simply cannot, like take several bounces through the middle of the ground and slot goals from outside 50. His kicking is as powerful as it is accurate, albeit with some decision making to tidy up.
There are few - if any - more versatile, or damaging players available in this year's crop. Cochrane's freakish, one-of-a-kind ability in each third of the ground makes him a unique prospect whose upside is difficult to comprehend. He could turn into a Bont-like mid, a forward in the Curnow mould, or a Stewart-esque defender.
Perhaps being slightly out of the spotlight through injury has saved Cochrane from facing as many queries as others. The main question mark surrounds his durability, having missed some landmark footy over the last 18 months through injury. Availability is always the best ability, so staying on the park will be key to his development.
Being a relatively lean and raw athlete, Cochrane will inevitably need to put on a little more size to handle the rigours of AFL footy. He is by no means a rake, but can continue to develop the contested side of his game to compliment his athletic superiority. If he becomes a dominant pack marker against senior bodies, he'll be impossible to stop.
DRAFT RANGE: Pick 1
SUMMARY:
Port Adelaide has not shied away from the fact that Cochrane is consensually viewed as the best player in this year’s draft pool. The club knows it, welcomes it, and will shout it from the rooftops. Current pick one holder Essendon has made the Power aware of its intention to place a bid on Cochrane off the bat, which would be the first time that has occurred since Jamarra Ugle-Hagan ended up at the Bulldogs in 2020. Despite a limited sample size in 2026, Cochrane’s ability and upside are clear. He could be absolutely anything at the top level and Port did the work early to ensure they would be able to secure his services. Lock it in.
