SNAPSHOT: “An explosive athlete with scintillating speed and attacking instincts to catch the opposition unawares.” – Michael Alvaro
There has been no hiding the abundant Suns Academy talent this year, with Dylan Patterson central to a brimming Queensland crop. The eye-catching utility has dazzled opponents and onlookers for several years now, resisting interest from rugby league clubs to pursue his Aussie rules dream. It has proven to be a shrewd decision, with the speedster considered a consensus top five prospect in this year’s draft.
Patterson was one of five Suns Academy members to earn All-Australian selection at the Under 16 National Championships. He was a low-possession, high-impact wingman then, capable of using his pace to hurt the opposition going forward. He continued to explore his versatility as a bottom-ager in 2024 and ended up earning a VFL berth with Gold Coast, making seven state league appearances.
While he spent plenty of time as a midfielder-forward, Patterson was again utilised as a wingman and dashing defender in the Under 17 Futures series – representing Queensland, and then moving on to the National Futures game on AFL Grand Final day. Patterson was duly inducted into the National Academy for 2025, and set up his top-age campaign by spending a block of his preseason training with the senior Suns.
The crowning moments in Patterson’s draft year came in Allies colours, playing out a full national carnival to be named the All-Australian half-back. He was amongst his side’s best players in three of four games and helped produce the game-winning passage in their only win, against Western Australia. He also added to his VFL exposure, playing four more games and saving a personal-best 24 disposals for last.
Patterson’s season ended a week after his final VFL outing, representing QAFL side Palm Beach Currumbin. He ended up sustaining a hamstring injury and did not participate in the National Draft Combine, but would likely have set the timing sheets alight with his explosive athletic attributes. Now, he’s part of the tricky equation Gold Coast has to navigate ahead of the draft, balancing quality recruits with star Academy graduates.

STRENGTHS:
+ Dare
+ Hurt factor
+ Line-breaking
+ Power
+ Speed
+ Tenacity
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Composure
- Endurance
- Kicking consistency
Patterson's raw speed is what sets him apart, and it goes hand-in-hand with his attacking instincts. While he didn't compete at the National Draft Combine, he would likely have featured near the top in all power-based events given how impressively he passes the eye test. His fast feet are simply dazzling, allowing him to operate in explosive bursts and immediately put the opposition on the back foot - or, leave them in his wake.
Not only is Patterson quick in straight lines, but also laterally. He has a wicked side-step and loves dropping the shoulder to take on opponents, carrying the ball in incisive fashion. That daring approach invites pressure, but Patterson's athleticism often gets him out of tight spots. Even when caught or forced into an error, he backs himself to continually take risks in hopes of producing even more damaging passages of play.
Patterson's uncompromising method makes him a high impact-per-possession player. With thanks to his line-breaking ability, he often facilitates his side's ball movement from end-to-end and acts as a key connection piece. In Allies colours, he averaged 430 metres gained per match, looking to manufacture direct and effective passages to extract the maximum hurt factor. He likes to see the game in front of him, and attack it.
While his outside running is as good as it gets, Patterson possesses the power and tenacity to thrive in a wide variety of situations. He backs himself as a midfielder, where his ability to fend off and wear contact comes to the fore. Patterson's tackling is another strength and he tends to enjoy getting stuck into physical battles. As much was evident during his two AFL Academy outings against VFL opposition, where he stood out in that regard.
There is an underrated sense of versatility to Patterson's profile. He has played across half-back, on the wing, and in a midfield-forward rotation over the last three years, bringing his best traits to each role. Though, he is seeking to improve his endurance running and that will perhaps help him to slot into the middle third of the ground most effectively. He's a sprinter, but not a particularly big accumulator of possessions.
Patterson can also look to refine some of his decision making and skill execution. He often operates in a high gear, setting off immediately and playing on pure instinct. While you don't want to kill those instincts, winding them back a touch will help to level out the consistency in his disposal. In particular, he is capable of dual-sided and penetrative kicking, but can also be prone to spraying it on the run or when faced with pressure.
DRAFT RANGE: 2-5
SUMMARY:
There was a flood of intrigue surrounding Patterson amid Gold Coast’s pursuit of Christian Petracca, with clubs like Richmond and Essendon suddenly in play to have an early bid go unmatched. Just how the Suns manage the maze of retaining top Academy talent like Patterson and Zeke Uwland remains to be seen, especially since there remains at least another three graduates who will attract bids in the National Draft. Patterson has a desire to get to the Suns but is open to playing anywhere and ironically grew up supporting Brisbane. He looms as a readymade prospect who is sure to excite, and should be in a good position to attack his first AFL preseason after rehabbing his hamstring.
