SNAPSHOT: “A competitive defender one-on-one with clean skills and strong hands in the air.”

Ella Jeffrey is a really good natural footballer. The Bendigo Pioneers midfielder/defender earned her shot at Vic Country this season and did not lower her colours, winning plenty of one-on-one battles while providing her customary run-and-carry out of the back half, culminating in a State Draft Combine invite at season’s end.

A draft prospect out of Kyneton, Jeffrey started her football career back in 2017 when she played 17 games for the club across both Under 10s and Under 12s as a nine year-old. By the end of 2019, Jeffrey had played 48 games at the level, including a couple of Under 14s matches in 2019. Coming off the back of a strong campaign that season, Jeffrey’s 2020 season – like so many others – was curtailed due to the global pandemic.

She notched up her 50th game through the 2021 season, playing eight matches and kicking a few goals as well. By 2022, Jeffrey had found her way into the Bendigo Pioneers’ pathway and earned a spot in the V/Line Cup squad where she was named among the best in both of her games that year. She represented the Bendigo Junior Football League, and booted nine goals from 13 games for Kyneton Under 16s.

On top of that, Jeffrey made her debut at Coates Talent League level against Tasmania Devils in Round 9 as a triple bottom-ager after playing through the girls’ Futures. On that day, Jeffrey had three disposals, one mark and two tackles to get a taste for it at just 14. A year later she became a consistent player in Bendigo’s lineup, also representing Vic Country at Under 16s level and still playing in the Kyneton Youth Girls for eight games.

As Coates Talent League began to become the focus, Jeffrey built up her consistency and numbers, with her disposals rising with each campaign. Last season, the Pioneers prospect made her senior debut for Kyneton and played in a heartbreaking one-point grand final loss to Macedon. Jeffrey got to run out for the Tigers in three more games, but made Vic Country and played throughout that carnival to average 11.8 disposals, 1.5 marks, 1.5 tackles and 1.5 rebound 50s.

In her top-age Pioneers season, Jeffrey added significant production to her game, averaging 17.6 disposals, 3.4 marks, 6.0 tackles, 2.0 clearances and 3.3 rebounds to her name. Her form throughout the year secured her a State Draft Combine invite.

STRENGTHS:

+ Clean skills
+ Aerial ability
+ One-on-ones
+ Competitiveness
+ Run-and-carry
+ Defensive pressure

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Endurance
- Composure

Without a doubt, Jeffrey has what it takes to make it to the next level, but also is a niche role that so few can play which only furthers her cause. What stands out about Jeffrey is the fact she can be a lockdown defender, offensive defender, or play through the middle - her preferred role - where she can again both get the ball forward or shut down an opponent.

Starting with her defensive traits as they really standout, Jeffrey is as competitive as they come, be it in the air or at ground level. She is not afraid to go for the mark, but is also a very competent spoiler to bring it to ground. Not having a massive vertical jump she can run into trouble against the ultra-athletic types - such as Bailee Martin during the national carnival - but against players with similar athleticism, she has incredibly safe hands.

The Martin matchup aside, Jeffrey did not lose many one-on-ones during the national carnival, and is best suited to play on a dangerous general forward because the Pioneers prospect has enough speed to match it with them, but also terrific strength which enables them to body up well too. She will lockdown on an opponent defensively and just play her role for the team, but when it is time to shine, she can step up to the plate.

Jeffrey does not mind to tuck the ball under the arm and provide some run-and-carry down the field exiting the defensive 50. Often she will kick long to go for that more dangerous target that can get over the top of the defence, or begin to break the game open. Her kicking and clean hands are attributes that are not often found in defensively-minded prospects who play lockdown roles, but Jeffrey has them in her repertoire so her teammates are more than comfortable handing her the ball.

The only knock on her ball use is when under pressure she can rush more and therefore turn the ball over or just kick to safety rather than precision or advantage so it comes back. With time and space, or when the game is on her terms, Jeffrey is a lovely ball user and can do plenty of damage by foot, or be clean at the stoppages as well.

That composure is a key improvement, as is her endurance, which is another reason why Jeffrey played the bulk of her year in defence, while still getting the midfield minutes she craved. Able to be comfortable around a stoppage, to do it full-time she will need to further build that tank and have the ability to impact for longer across the four quarters.

Essentially, Jeffrey looms as a shrewd selection for a club who knows she is one big preseason away from taking her game to another level. As a defensive player, Jeffrey will bleed for the jumper and if anything can give away free kicks in frustration because she is so passionate about winning the ball. A 'white line fever' type who teammates will love running out alongside.

If she can develop her areas of improvement, Jeffrey has a lot of positives in her game, and they all culminate into a really nice well-rounded profile. There are no guarantees in the draft, especially for State Draft Combine invitees, but Jeffrey is one who should be considered for her work and also potential future scope.

DRAFT RANGE: 40-60

SUMMARY:

Ella Jeffrey is in the mix for that mid-to-late draft selection. She does her role each and every week, can fill out a few different roles, and has a nice balance in her game. Depending on how many picks are used in this year’s AFLW Draft, the Bendigo Pioneers defender-midfielder should at least come into some club’s thinking from the mid-point of the draft.
