SNAPSHOT: “A powerful half-back who can also play in other positions and won Vic Country’s Under 16s MVP.”
Ella Stoddart has had no shortage of accolades over the last few years, with the Gippsland Power talent winning All-Australian honours at Under 15s and Under 16s level, as well as being a MVP winner in the latter’s carnival. While predominantly a defender, Stoddart has spent time both through the middle and up forward.
Stoddart’s football career started a decade ago with the Police Boys Junior Football Club in the Traralgon and District Junior Football League. By the time the global pandemic had rolled around, she had already played 80 matches. It was a phenomenal achievement for a player who had only just reached her teenage years, and returning from the year off, she picked up where she left off.
In 2022, Stoddart switched to the Traralgon Youth Girls program where she looked miles above with 24 goals in 12 games and named among the best eight times en route to a flag that year with an 89-0 result and she was best on ground in the win. That same year, Stoddart made her Coates Talent League Girls debut and played 10 games for the Power, named among the best eight times despite being a triple bottom-ager.
From there, Stoddart’s trajectory took off, representing Vic Country across the next three seasons, first at Under 16s level in 2023, then at Under 18s level across 2024-25. Throughout that time, Stoddart’s numbers have remained relatively even both through the national championships and at Coates Talent League level, winning between 15-20 touches per game and taking two to three marks as well.
Perhaps her peak year from a production perspective was in 2023 when Stoddart racked up 23.4 disposals, 3.1 marks, 2.5 tackles and 6.7 rebound 50s, though that was when she was a pure defender. In recent times, the Power player has gone forward or through the middle which diluted her numbers a touch, and resulted in her actually kicking 15 goals over her last 28 Talent League Girls games, as well as improving her inside 50 numbers.
Stoddart’s 2025 season looked a little bit down to start with, before finding confidence with a 30-plus disposal game and from there never looked back, finishing strongly at that level, and showing her wares across the national championships with 15.3 disposals, 3.3 marks and 4.0 rebound 50s to remind everyone of her capabilities.

STRENGTHS:
+ Reading the play
+ Run-and-carry
+ Penetrating kick
+ Footy IQ
+ One-on-ones
+ Strength
+ Versatility
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Athleticism
- Explosive speed
An easy plug-and-play choice for a running half-back, Stoddart provides terrific run and carry off the back of reading the play exceptionally well and driving the ball out of the defensive 50 with a penetrating left boot. The Gippsland Power talent is at her best when she can dictate play from defence and put the game on her terms, and while at times early in the season - and moments last year - she would tend to rush her decision making out of the back half, when she builds in confidence and consistency, she is damaging by foot.
While Stoddart provides plenty of run and carry, she is not explosive, and that speed and athleticism as a whole are areas that the Vic Country prospect can build on, but once she has the right position and wins the ball, then she is in her element. Thanks to Stoddart's ability to read the ball in flight, she positions herself perfectly to either intercept, or receive by hand and take off down the field.
From a footballing perspective, it should come as no surprise that Stoddart's IQ is quite high as she just understands the game so well and has been able to adapt to multiple positions as well. While not the most athletic player, Stoddart can get the advantage in contests with her strength and one-on-one ability both in the defensive 50 and around the coalface.
While players who have that extra hop or burst can trouble her, Stoddart is very good at dictating contests and forcing them into one-on-ones where possible. More importantly, she plays to her strengths and is quite often utilised as the third-up tall who can float across and intercept, or add an extra number to a contest to favour her side.
With any time or space, Stoddart can use her cannon of a left boot to penetrate right down the ground and open up plays from defence. Her efficiency is at its best when she can receive and go from behind the ball, or look for one-twos in order to buy time and get on the move. When forward, her strength one-on-one comes into play, and she can protect the drop zone well, or fight for the contested ball at ground level.
Going into the future, Stoddart is likely to be that rebounding half-back, but being able to play across multiple positions will be a big tick, and she is one of the most experienced footballers for her age, having amassed 50 games for Gippsland Power, just about unheard of at Coates Talent League Girls level.
DRAFT RANGE: 25-40
SUMMARY:
Ella Stoddart is an experienced half-back who knows how to provide run-and-carry from the defensive half and is strong one-on-one. While not the most athletically gifted prospect, Stoddart plays to her strengths and is a consistent and damaging prospect out of the back half with a penetrating left boot. Expect her to be in the mix for that second round region.
