Summary
SNAPSHOT: “A dynamic and classy forward who upped her overall profile throughout her top-age season.”
Evelyn Connolly has not always been a pure forward, but she has shown over the last couple of seasons – and particularly in 2025 – just how damaging shde can be in front of the big sticks. The talented Dandenong Stingrays and Vic Country sharpshooter has made a name for kicking bags of goals at times, and presents as that medium forward who can lead-up, wrestle or crumb.
Connolly’s football journey began out at Narre North Foxes in the South East Juniors back in 2015 and she followed that into the South Belgrave Lysterfield (SBL) Wolves in the Eastern Region Female Football League by 2018. Still only young, Connolly was making her mark in front of the big sticks, and by 2019 had booted more than a goal per game.
Though 2020 was wiped out due to the global pandemic, Connolly returned strongly the following year to run out for Lysterfield’s Under 16s side as well as represented the Eastern Football Netball League in the Junior Development Series. Interruptions kept her to five games in 2022, before her double bottom-age season resulted in Connolly putting her name on the map.
Starting out with Dandenong Stingrays’ Futures squad, she kicked a goal in each of her Under 16s matches and therefore earned a spot with Vic Country in the National Development Championships. Continuing that goal-a-game performance throughout, she returned to the SBL Wolves for a further six games – and seven goals – but cracked in for her Stingrays’ Under 18s debut and played the last four games of the season.
That stint would hold her in good stead ahead of her bottom-age campaign. She would go on to play 15 games across all thirds of the ground, but when forward slammed home 21 majors at an average of 1.4 per game, with hauls of five (Sandringham Dragons) and four (Bendigo Pioneers) the most notable, but hitting the scoreboard in 11 of her 15 matches.
A big preseason – and wraps from the coaching staff – resulted in a huge start for Connolly who piled on 21 goals in her first seven games, booting multiple majors in every match and averaging three per game. Inaccuracy – after being a reliable set shot began to impact her final tally, but she found her mark in the do-or-die preliminary final booting 4.0 against Oakleigh Chargers to help deliver her side into the grand final.
Connolly ended the year averaging 12.8 disposals, 3.5 marks, 3.0 tackles and a massive 2.4 goals per game with 31 majors in 13 matches, and though she did have some post-season surgery meaning she missed the State Draft Combine, still earned the invite showing she attracted AFLW club interest.

STRENGTHS:
+ Goal sense
+ X-factor
+ One-on-ones
+ Forward craft
+ Reading the play
+ Scoreboard impact
+ Defensive pressure
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Speed
- Athleticism
- Accuracy consistency
When it comes to naturally gifted forwards, Evelyn Connolly is one of the most talented close to the big sticks. While at times her accuracy wavered in 2025, when she is on, she is a deadeye from any range or distance inside 50. Her pure instincts make her a scoring machine, and if everything aligns, can be a damaging player at the next level.
Connolly has spent time through the middle as a powerful clearance player, and even down back with her one-on-one ability and smarts coming to the fore. Her natural instincts allow her to anticipate the ball drop inside 50 and position herself accordingly, getting a lot of shots on goal. In fact, throughout the Coates Talent League Girls competition, Connolly booted 31.27 - a massive 58 shots on goal - the same amount of shots that leading goalkicker Bailee Martin had with 38 majors.
Bookending the season, Connolly was booting them from anywhere. She was nailing set shots, marking them, handing them off, doing everything you could expect of a forward. Then came the game against Sandringham where Connolly still kicked a couple of goals but missed some easy majors for her, including one running into an open goal from practically the goalsquare.
It triggered inaccuracy across the course of the season until she found her grove just when her team needed her, kicking the four straight against the Chargers, including the final goal after the siren to be mobbed as her team secured its grand final spot. All in all, with her confidence high she can not even look like missing, but as can be the case for forwards, confidence can also waver.
However Connolly's traits do not, and her one-on-one ability after reading the ball in flight and winning the contest enable her to do a lot of damage on the scoreboard and punish the opposition. With outstanding forward craft to be there at the feet of her talls, or to be the leading target herself, she knows where to be, and when to pounce, often bobbing up out of nowhere to deliver a six-pointer.
What has really developed over the course of the last two seasons is her defensive pressure, with Connolly moving away from being a pure offensive talent, to add serious aggression and defensive work to her forward game. She hunts defenders and wins free kicks, crucially adding that aspect to her repertoire.
Given her main areas of improvement come from her athletic profile - such as speed, agility or her athleticism - Connolly does well to maximise what she can do well. Her anticipation and footy smarts enable her to react quickly, and she can be upon unsuspecting defenders in a flash. If she continues to work on her athletic qualities, then Connolly - who built a bigger tank over last off-season - can certainly make her mark at a higher grade.
DRAFT RANGE: Late
SUMMARY:
Evelyn Connolly is a high IQ forward who can do a lot of damage on the scoreboard, but has worked hard on her endurance and defensive pressure to be a more well-rounded player. While still needing to develop athletic attributes, her natural footballing abilities are undoubted and in the same mould as a Georgia Knight from last year, could be viewed as a pure scoring machine, albeit a little later on.
