SNAPSHOT: “A consistent presence down back who can accumulate high numbers of possessions, while holding up just as reliably in the contest.” – Adrian Dixon
Standing at 188cm, Finn Davis of the Western Jets is a versatile defender with the ability to fulfil multiple roles in the backline; whether that be playing the lockdown role on talls and smalls, or as a running defender that can set up the play going from one end to the other.
Starting his footballing journey with Williamstown juniors in the now known Western Football Netball League competition, Davis would win multiple team and league best and fairest awards. He would also represent the competition in interleague squads at Under 14 and 15 level in 2021 and 2022 respectively, which saw him catch the eye of the Western Jets program.
As a result, he was included in their Under 16 squad for the 2023 season. Davis performed well in both games against the Calder Cannons and Northern Knights respectively, while also appearing in all three of Vic Metro’s games at the Under 16 National Championships. Davis’ season with Williamstown juniors was also a success, managing 17 goals from nine games.
Moving into the Western Jets Under 18 squad in 2024, Davis would perform very well in his first year, giving him a great understanding and preparation for his top-age campaign. While his game was more focused defensively, he still managed to find the footy and provide drive from the defensive 50 when possible.
Davis had a strong back-end to the 2024 season which saw him being named amongst the Jets’ better players, however, he would miss the last game of the regular season and Wildcard Round due to injury. During his bottom-age year, he also represented Vic Metro during the Under 17 trial game and overall managed 12 appearances for the Jets.
Heading into 2025, Davis spent time with local VFL club Williamstown in the preseason, where he had gained a greater understanding of the requirements of playing at a higher level. He also spent some time in the gym to further develop his frame and was named in the Vic Metro summer hub.
After a slow start to the season where he had missed the first month-and-a-half due to an injury, Davis returned for the game against the Northern Territory in May and while he took time to find his groove, would eventually be amongst the Jets’ more consistent performers during the season, being named in the best players in the majority of the games he played.
He was rewarded for his consistency by being named in the final Vic Metro squad where he played in the last two games. Returing to run out his season with Western, Davis managed a second-place finish in the region’s best and fairest count. Overall, his 2025 season saw him average 27.7 disposals, 6.0 marks and 6.4 rebound 50s. Davis would also be invited to the National Draft Combine held recently.
Davis models his game on Bailey Dale of the Western Bulldogs, who he also is a supporter of, while he also has drawn some similarities to Jake Lloyd of Sydney. Davis also enjoys watching St Kilda star Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera.
STRENGTHS:
+ Accumulation
+ Consistency
+ Efficiency
+ Intercept marking
+ Run-and-carry
+ Versatility
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Durability
- Size
In 2025, Davis saw his role change at the Jets from a more defensive orientation to a more attacking mindset when coming out of defence. Combined with Tom Burton, usually the two would provide plenty of drive to launch attacks further up the ground. Davis' rebound run caused plenty of damage for opposition sides combined with his clean delivery of the ball by foot, along with speed and composure. In his first few games for the 2025 season, Davis would often drop off and intercept while also providing run on the overlap, further highlighting his ability to accumulate.
Davis’ versatility is another asset he brings to any side he plays for. While his run and gun style was best noted this year, he also proved that he can play other defensive roles if need be. Against the Calder Cannons mid-season, Davis was a rock at the back where he took numerous marks and won several one-on-one contests, showcasing his spoiling ability. In 2024, Davis’ game was based on being more of a lockdown type where he was responsible for solely shutting down his opponent, before eventually being given a license to roam.
Davis’ consistency when he got some continuity into his football was a highlight of his 2025 season. In the back-end of the season he was named amongst the coaches' bests on nine consecutive occasions while playing for the Jets, compared to a run of five different occasions in 2024. Very rarely if at all did he drop below 20 disposals in a game game, proving just how easily he racks up the ball to make both defensive and offensive contributions.
While Davis has shown he can compete against bigger bodies at the junior level, he will need to be able to further build on his physical attributes to compete against the more experienced opponents at the highest level. Not only that, he will also need to improve his durability as he has missed certain periods of football due to injury - however the improvement in this area will come with more work in a professional environment.
DRAFT RANGE: Late/Rookie
SUMMARY:
While Davis has been one of the better defenders in the Coates Talent League over the last two seasons, expect him to feature in the latter stages of the draft. With his ability to play multiple roles in the backline, while also being able to use the footy efficiently, the Western Jets prospect will be on the radar of a few clubs that need to add to their defensive depth – including the likes of North Melbourne, Carlton and the Western Bulldogs, who have picks in the latter range.
