SNAPSHOT: “An uber-athletic ruck-forward who leaps at the ball aggressively and can work his opponent over with great speed off the mark.” – Michael Alvaro

We’ve all heard of the fabled basketball background, but how about an athletics one? Greater Western Victoria (GWV) Rebels ruck-forward Floyd Burmeister hails from the world of high jump, but has recently shot to stardom as a rising AFL Draft prospect. The 199cm talent impressed with a full season of Coates Talent League football, having only made four appearances in his debut Under 18 campaign last year.

Having been identified as one to watch by Rebels coach David Loader in preseason, Burmeister made good on the promise his athletic profile projected with 15 outings as GWV qualified for its first Grand Final in 27 years. His start to the year was terrific, stringing together a streak of scoring games between Rounds 2-10, including a personal-best of three majors against Gippsland Power.

Burmeister’s early season exploits led to Vic Country selection alongside a slew of fellow Rebels. He played all four games at the National Championships, splitting his time between the ruck and forwardline against some of 2024’s top tall talents. An invite to the National Draft Combine then came Burmeister’s way and he impressed across the board, particularly with the third-best standing vertical jump (74cm).

PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:

STRENGTHS:

+ Aggression
+ Athleticism
+ Kick penetration
+ Mobility
+ Upside
+ Vertical leap

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Production
- Rawness

At the core of Burmeister's upside is his athleticism. Both in the ruck and up forward, he showcases his physical attributes with a spring-heeled leap and great speed off the mark. What that translates to is competitive work at the centre bounces and the ability to work his opponents over on the lead, particularly when venturing outside attacking 50. He has the tools to best most key position players, mobility-wise.

Burmeister's impressive leap was showcased at the National Draft Combine, where he placed third in the standing vertical jump (74cm) and sixth in the running vertical jump (90cm). His ability to cover ground was also proven in the data with a 3.05-second 20-metre sprint and 6:36 2km time trial. Not only nimble, Burmeister is quite dextrous in that he is capable of following up at ground level and scoops up the ball well below his knees.

It means that he has a dynamic range of avenues to goal. While improvements can be made in the way of his contested and overhead marking, Burmeister makes good on what delivery he receives by being able to either mark with separation on the lead or mop up ground balls. His ability to stay involved with the play after aerial contests means he can get his frame over the ball and find the space to snap goals with his deceptively good agility.

Given he spends a lot of time roaming up the ground, Burmeister's kick penetration is a handy asset. The loping left-footer is capable of sending the ball long inside 50 either out of centre stoppages or when wheeling around back to goal. There remains a sense of rawness to his skills and craft, but Burmeister can be effective with that direct type of play.

Burmeister got to show a glimpse of his upside when utilised on the wing in the Coates Talent League Grand Final. There, his versatility shone through and it is clear he has a very high ceiling. That game was also one of three where he bagged multiple goals (two). Apart from a high of three in Round 7, his other pair of majors came against the highly touted Noah Mraz (Dandenong) in Round 3.

The next step for Burmeister will be to add some size and become a more prominent marking force. He works into good spots and has the athletic base to beat opponents around the ground, but only averages around 10 touches and two marks per game. Lifting his production level will help offer a greater sense of consistency as he continues to round out his game and build the confidence to perform from week to week.

DRAFT RANGE: Late-Rookie

A talented and deep draft crop means competition for spots are at an all-time high. Burmeister fits into the category of developable and athletic talls who are often rewarded with opportunities late in the intake. With more readymade key position players available between the first and second rounds, expect Burmeister to feature thereafter, though he arguably has enough traits to be given a shot at the top level. He can only get better.
