SNAPSHOT: “A hard-running contested ball-winner with elite defensive pressure and won Vic Country’s MVP at the national championships.”

Georgia Tyrrell is the type of player any teammate would love to lineup alongside. Her contested game, defensive attributes and lead-by-example style help raise others up and those teammates stand taller because of her output. The Vic Country MVP winner earned a State Draft Combine invitation after a really consistent season for both Geelong Falcons and Country.

Her journey began in the Under 12s at Ocean Grove where she moved through the AFL Barwon pathway to join popular club St Josephs in 2021 post-Covid. Starting to show the signs of a highly talented player, Tyrrell played 12 games and was named among the best plaeyrs on nine occasions. By 2022, Tyrrell was selected for the Barwon Cats’ V/Line Cup squad and moved up to the Under 18s at St Josephs where she impressed as a 15-year-old.

It was that year where Tyrrell got her chance with the Falcons, making her debut in Round 1 of that year. One of those rare players who has spent four years at her Coates Talent League Girls club, the Falcons midfielder ran out for the ‘Big V’ in the National Development Championships the following season, and became a lock in the Falcons’ program after Round 7 all the way through to the preliminary final.

Another big year from Tyrrell followed in 2024 as she started to show signs of being that strong and consistent inside midfielder she would become. Generally a reliable user when in space and able to bring her teammates into the game, she formed a great one-two punch with Stella Huxtable.

By 2025, she was one of the most prolific onballers in the competition, averaging 2.48 disposal and a mind-boggling 11.2 tackles, before putting up similar defensive numbers (11.3 tackles) at the national carnival. She also averaged 17.3 disposals and 4.0 clearances to earn her state’s MVP, but was unlucky to miss out on All-Australian honours.

At the end of the season, Tyrrell received a State Draft Combine invite, rewarded for a year of incredible consistency.

STRENGTHS:

+ Contested work
+ Defensive pressure
+ Competitiveness
+ Clean skills
+ Consistency
+ Leadership

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Speed
- Composure

One of those players you know exactly what you are going to get from them, Tyrrell is one of the most consistent ball-winners across the Coates Talent League. Her work on the inside is where she does her best work. With a great competitiveness and natural leadership instincts. the Geelong Falcons skipper rarely plays a bad game and the gap between her best and worst performances is narrow.

The Vic Country MVP just goes out and plays her role each and every week, with a fantastic defensive appetite and willing to do whatever it takes for her side. Clearly, averaging more than 11 tackles per game not only at Talent League level but national championships as well speaks to her mindset and the work she does without the ball.

Naturally her work rate and determination to force turnovers or lock the ball up and reset stands out in her performances each and every week. From a disposal point of view, she has clean hands and great strength when tackled, able to dish off to a teammate when drawing an opponent. Her stoppage craft and understanding of the game is high, and she gets into ball-winning positions. Even if not able to find space, she is quick to clear the zone be it via a kick or a handball to a teammate on the move.

Her composure at times can be a little rushed under pressure, but her technique is quite good and if in space or after a mark, Tyrrell will rarely miss a kick, particularly over short, sharp distances. If she can continue building that composure when under pressure, she will further develop that aspect of her game, because she wins so much of it and puts the opposition under even more pressure with her defensive acts.

The main knock on Tyrrell's profile is her speed. She is not one who will break away from congestion, and is suited to that first-possession winning role, or the one who will get her hands dirty, receive the quick handball or loose ball, then keep it moving in transition. Tyrrell can definitely improve her speed, particularly around contests because she has the strength to shrug tackles, so adding some extra power would aid her.

As a whole, the Geelong Falcons skipper and best and fairest winner is the type of player who will leave nothing out there in her bid to get better. A quality character to go with her mindset, she is one who if given a chance, will do whatever it takes to go to the next level. Defensively and contested wise, she is right up there with the very best.

DRAFT RANGE: Late

SUMMARY:

Georgia Tyrrell has some elite defensive and contested traits, though that lack of speed will be the main question mark. Given her character and determination to get better, the Vic Country MVP is a chance to be picked up late, particularly with her consistency over the last couple of seasons.
