SNAPSHOT: “A versatile tall prospect with who combines his sound endurance base with high-IQ running patterns to make for high-production performances.” – Denholm Melrose

Somewhat of a jack-of-all-trades, Under 18’s State representative Hamish Davis is an aerobic anomaly. Capable of playing as a tall forward, medium forward or midfielder, he has all the traits to become an elite utility. After averaging 15 disposals and kicking seven goals across four National Championships games, Davis went back to WAFL Colts level and in his second game back amassed 40 disposals to go with nine marks and a goal, leading to his elevation to senior level for the Tigers’ League side. He went on to play in seven consecutive games in the top flight, more than holding his own. Davis played one of the single best games of any draft prospect in 2024, accumulating 21 disposals and kicking four goals in a best on ground performance in Claremont’s WAFL League elimination final win over East Fremantle.

PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:

STRENGTHS:

+ Endurance
+ Footy IQ
+ Running patterns
+ Scoreboard impact
+ Size
+ Versatility

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Explosive speed
- Kicking action

Davis averaged over 22 disposals per game and kicked 14 goals in nine Colts games this season, proving he can perform in the midfield and up forward. As a midfielder Davis’ disposal is tidy but attacking. He dares to pick off difficult kicks at times to create forays forward and takes the game on with ball in hand, often making time stand still while he determines his best course of action. Davis is athletic, able to spin away from opponents, shrug off would-be tacklers and involve his fellow midfielders.

As a forward Davis is often used as a hit-up target out on the lead. He did so in his League stint for Claremont, working over his opponent to create space and separation. Aerially he was able to hold his own, utilising intelligent bodywork to shift his way into marking position. Davis is clean below his knees and demonstrated that no more so than against Subiaco in Round 21 - a game in which he collected 16 disposals and kicked three goals - where he picked the ball up with one touch, turned and snapped a goal over his shoulder from 45 metres out.

Though his kicking action is awkward, and his ball drop could do with some tweaking, Davis remains clean with ball in hand, and on target when kicking at goal, so it has not affected him too much to this point. Davis can hit the scoreboard from any position on the ground, and his production across all levels of football in 2024 has been prolific. He has great football smarts, and after co-captaining the Tigers' Colts side to a flag, it is easy to see why he has such good leadership tendencies.

DRAFT RANGE: 25-40

SUMMARY:

Davis’ fantastic stint with Claremont’s League side has him rising up draft boards, putting him into potential first round calculations. His physical traits paired with his footballing ability and versatility make him an intriguing prospect that clubs don’t get the choice of too often. Just where he fits in at the next level will be interesting. Clubs may value his running patterns and dynamism as a high forward, though he could just as easily play deep. A wing may suit given his height and endurance, while the midfield cannot be ruled out long-term. The world is Davis’ oyster, expect him to push for selection within the top 25 picks, or somewhere shortly thereafter.
