SNAPSHOT: “A competitive, pure key defender who marks everything that comes his way.” – Michael Alvaro

Harry Dean has come from the clouds to be regarded as this year’s premier key defensive prospect. He comes from good stock as the son of 248-game Carlton premiership champion Peter Dean, who has had a major influence on his career to date. It’s fitting then, that Dean junior came through the father-son academy named in Dean senior’s honour, and will end up at Princes Park.

While Dean has enjoyed a decorated year to climb into top 10 calculations, it wasn’t all smooth sailing to this point. His one and only Coates Talent League appearance last year was cut short after severely breaking his arm upon landing from an attempted speccy. Though, it presented an opportunity for him to add size, improve his running, and eye off a full preseason heading into 2025.

He hit the ground running as a top-ager, catching the eye in a best on ground practice match performance for Murray. That form followed into season proper, where Dean earned CTL Team of the Year honours and made the step up for Vic Country. At representative level, he was duly named All-Australian and was arguably unlucky not to have taken out his side’s Most Valuable Player award.

Dean’s development has also been accelerated by hands-on work with Carlton. The likes of Mitch McGovern and Nick Haynes helped mentor him during his preseason stint at the Blues, while Nic Newman is among those to have given pointers through vision and analysis. When his name is eventually called out, he’s one who will be well positioned to make a fast start at AFL level.

STRENGTHS:

+ Athleticism
+ Competitiveness
+ Distribution
+ Intercepting
+ Overhead marking
+ Reading the play

IMPROVEMENTS:

- In-between size
- Versatility

The crux of Dean's game revolves around his defensive craft. He's a nailed-on backman who is incredibly tough to beat and has put on several marking masterclasses this season. With early reads on the play, Dean utilises his athleticism to arrive at the ideal drop zone or close in on aerial contests, before leaping high to impact with a spoil or intercept mark. He's incredibly tough to beat one-on-one and is prepared to put his body on the line.

All of the above is what makes Dean a great competitor. He played in just four wins between Murray Bushrangers and Vic Country this year, proving a reliable figure behind the ball. If not for his influence, many of the losses his side's suffered would have been far worse. His intercept work is incredibly clean and assured, as is his ability to distribute the ball quickly. He's an efficient left-foot kick who backs his skills on the way out.

For all his aerial nous, Dean is also quite competent roaming across the ground. He runs a sub-three second 20m sprint and seems comfortable in possession, using it well by hand. He is a keen tackler too, able to lock up opponents to form another method of shutting down opposition attacks. Everything about his game screams composure and dependability. You feel safe when he's in the area for your side.

Picking out glaring improvement areas for Dean is like splitting hairs. By his own admission, he's somewhat of an in-betweener at 193cm - not quite key position height but not exactly a medium-small. He plays taller but has the weapons of both types of players, although was tested at times this year when conceding 5-10cm of height. Perhaps he'll be best suited as a second or third intercept defender upon entering the AFL.

While versatile in term of his primary position, able to play on a range of opponents and in different roles, Dean has essentially played down back his whole career. It means his craft is as good as it gets for a player his age, but he hasn't necessarily had the opportunity to test himself in different thirds of the ground. Although, when you're so good in your main post, it's little wonder why he hasn't left it.

DRAFT RANGE: 6-12

SUMMARY:

The dearth of key defenders in this year’s crop means Dean’s price comes at an elevated premium, though that is somewhat countered by being locked behind father-son eligibility to Carlton. In an open pool, he would arguably be a consensus top 10 selection, so on merit should still attract an early bid. He has already been working with the Blues to develop his game, and with a player like Jack Silvagni heading out the door, the youngster will be a fitting long-term replacement down back. It’s a big win for Carlton, with Cody Walker also poised to arrive next year.
