SNAPSHOT:

Holly O’Flaherty is an over-ager Brisbane Lions Academy prospect who earned an AFLW Draft Combine invite off limited form, but enough to suggest she can take the next step in her football journey. A speedy midfielder with clean hands and great defensive pressure, O’Flaherty is in line to be a possible AFLW draftee.

STRENGTHS:

+ Speed
+ Balance
+ Work rate
+ Clean hands
+ Defensive pressure

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Kicking consistency
- Production

PROFILE:

O'Flaherty enjoyed an impressive season with Wilston Grange last year, running out in 12 games and was named among the best nine times at QAFL Women's level. Though she did not get the chance to run out for Queensland, that chance would come in 2023, where she played two games - against Allies and Vic Country - and got her moment on the national stage.

Another big change in 2023 was O'Flaherty making the move to Aspley where she played five games, including three finals. Though her Hornets side fell short of a premiership, O'Flaherty was named among the best in Aspley's defeat to Bond University.

O'Flaherty is not a huge production player, averaging 14.2 disposals in the QAFL Women's, but at almost 50 per cent contested. Her defensive pressure is a strong feature of her game, and though she only had the 2.4 tackles per game at senior level, it came to the fore against opposition her own agae at the national championships.

She laid 5.5 tackles per game from eight touches for Queensland, showing off her clean hands and balance through midfield. Able to play on both sides of midfield, O'Flaherty has a terrific work rate across the ground, and that helps her impact contest-to-contest. She tested well in the 2km time trial at the AFLW Draft Combine, with that speed-endurance mix a feature of her game.

O'Flaherty does have areas to work on, with a bit more polish on her kicking -along with a raised production rate will help further develop her game. Her hands are clean on the isnide, and she has the knack to win contested ball. With a desire to already work to the outside, O'Flaherty has the tools to further develop which is what clubs will see in her.

Overall, O'Flaherty has shown developmental signs from 2022 to 2023, which was identified in her move to the Queensland squad. Though she has those areas to improve on, defensively she is strong, and has the work rate to get better.

SUMMARY:

Holly O’Flaherty is one of a number of late draft possibilities, with the Lions Academy member no doubt looked at closely by her Academy-tied club. Though the squeeze for spots at the Queensland clubs will be tight, O’Flaherty’s season has put her in the mix.
