Summary
SNAPSHOT: “South Adelaide’s Jaiden Magor is a dynamic forward/midfielder capable of impacting the scoreboard in attack and winning his own ball with power through the middle.”
South Australian Jaiden Magor is one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2022 draft pool, given his projected upside and flashes of individual brilliance across the season. Magor entered draft calculations towards the back-end of last season after he booted two bags of four goals for South Adelaide’s U18’s. Having finished his schooling at Sacred Heart College last season, and playing a key role in the school’s undefeated run, Magor began his top-aged year at the Panthers, where he strung together eight U18 matches. He booted 12 goals in these games and won plenty of the ball throughout, including a massive 41-disposal effort against eventual premiers Glenelg. He lined up for SA in their opening National Championship clash with the Allies and kicked two first-half goals, but unfortunately suffered an ankle injury which kept him sidelined for two months. Magor returned for rounds 17 and 18 with the Panthers and didn’t disappoint, kicking five goals against the Bulldogs and backing it up with six majors against Woodville-West Torrens to remind recruiters of his match-winning capabilities in attack.
STRENGTHS:
+ Power + Scoreboard impact + Clean hands + Contested ball + X-Factor
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Foot skills - Outside game
Jaiden Magor's strengths are well suited to the modern game and should appeal to recruiters. He has split his time between the forward line and midfield across his junior career, achieving success in both roles. In attack, the Myponga-Sellicks prospect has already won several games off his own boot. His aforementioned bags of five and six goals late in the year both resulted in Panther wins, and he was kept goalless just once across ten U18 matches in 2022, by West Adelaide in round nine. Magor troubles defenders with his one-on-one marking ability and tendency to always know where the goals are. He kicked a stunning snap goal against the Allies to prove his natural forward smarts on the national stage in the Croweaters' win.
A noted goal kicker, Magor's forward craft is terrific, however clubs will likely be keen to use him as a burst midfielder given his power, impact per possession and cleanliness at ground level. Magor is not a dominant disposal winner, although he did average a sound 22.4 disposals at Under 18s level this season, but rather an onballer who will make the most of his touches. He possesses a powerful burst of speed on the inside which allows him to exit congestion - am attractive trait shared by many of the best midfielders in the country. Magor is a strong contested ball winner at stoppages and a very capable clearance player.
Magor has been used almost exclusively as either a forward or inside midfielder with South Adelaide and at college and state level. His strength and power over the ball certainly makes him a promising inside player, however he'll need to find a way to improve his outside game. An inconsistent kick at this stage, if Magor can find some uncontested ball on the outside and use it with a bit more composure, he has the tools to become one of the best players in the class.
DRAFT RANGE: 40+
SUMMARY:
Although he may be one of the lesser known prospects in the draft pool, recruiters are well aware of Jaiden Magor’s upside. He projects as a later round pick at this stage, and could drift into the rookie draft, but his scoreboard impact and power will be attractive to clubs. Magor still needs to add to his outside game and could refine his foot skills at the next level, but the way he finished the season, especially after sustaining a nasty ankle injury, could see him given an opportunity on an AFL list.
