SNAPSHOT: “A relentless rebound runner who can carve up the opposition with his foot skills and high metres gained.” – Denholm Melrose

A hard running defender and wingman who does not take a step backwards, Jaxon Artemis only knows one way. He became an expert at distributing from defensive 50 and beginning South Fremantle’s chains of attack. He was rewarded for his early season form with State Under 18 selection, before going to another level for Western Australia and claiming the state’s MVP title at the National Championships. Artemis attacked from the backline with flare and dash, collecting 39 disposals across his games against Vic Metro and Vic Country.

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Consistency
- Strength

Artemis’ running is one of his best attributes as a player. He runs intelligent patters to create space and receive the ball in attacking positions. His teammates entrust him with the important job of transitioning the ball from half-back to inside 50, and he often creates forays forward that lead to scoring opportunities. Artemis doesn’t blaze away, rather staying composed, lowering his eyes, and finding targets forward of the ball. He is highly adept at hitting 45-degree kicks into the corridor and then continuing his run to receive the ball multiple times in single passages.

When playing as the rebounding defender, Artemis has the speed and endurance to run both ways, meaning even after attacking and delivering the ball inside 50, he is just as capable and willing to get back behind the play and defend hard. Though he lacks for strength in his top-age season, he has defensive smarts that allow him to impact contests from behind and on the run, at both ground level and in the air. A year or two in a professional environment will certainly help Artemis put on some size that will allow him to take his game to the next level.

Artemis is also more than capable of playing on the wing and did so many times throughout this season. His endurance is impressive, running both ways and holding width intelligently to provide his side with an easy exit option if needed. He gets all the way up and back, assisting at full forward or full back, and can be used in transition on the wing too with his extreme burst of speed. At the National Draft Combine Artemis put this speed on full display with an explosive 2.959-second 20m sprint, good for seventh overall.

One aspect of Artemis’ game that could be worked on is his consistency. He is capable of hugely productive quarters but can drift in and out of games. In a match against Perth in Round 20 of the WAFL Colts season, Artemis started like a house on fire on his way to a blistering 10-disposal, three-mark and one-goal opening term. However, he collected only six disposals and two marks for the rest of the game. If Artemis can develop ways to stay in the game more often and more consistently, he will become a more productive player. As he showed across all levels he played at this season, he makes things happen with ball in hand. Teammates should trust Artemis to use the ball well and try to get it into his hands as much as possible.

DRAFT RANGE: Late-Rookie

Artemis projects as a speedy rebound defender at the next level, and while it is tough to say what his draft range will be, he has traits that align with the trends of AFL in that he takes the game on with daring dash and smart ball use. His excellent running ability will also be of interest to AFL clubs, and he has the kind of game which is easily adapted to the wing. Look for him to feature late in the draft crop.
