SNAPSHOT: “A lethal left-footer whose skills and decision making exceed all-comers in this year’s draft crop.” – Michael Alvaro

Josh Lindsay has put together a stellar junior resume, establishing himself as a big game player and one with the utmost class. He put his name on the map with best on ground performances in last year’s National Under 17 Futures match, and the AFL Academy’s second game this year.

The 18-year-old went on to nail his spot at half-back in the Coates Talent League Team of the Year and Under 18 All-Australian side. He was tested at elevated levels but his ball use held him in good stead, while testing out his midfield craft increasingly with the Falcons and Geelong Grammar.

Lindsay considers himself somewhat of a “footy nuffy” and grew up supporting North Melbourne. He models his game on the likes of Sydney star Errol Gulden, for his inside-outside balance, and Collingwood champion Scott Pendlebury, for his professionalism and longevity.

STRENGTHS:

+ Class
+ Decision making
+ Efficiency
+ Footy IQ
+ Kicking
+ Vision

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Contested game
- Defensive work rate
- Speed

The best place to start with Lindsay is his primary weapon - kicking. He is the consensus best ball user in the draft crop and took little time to claim that mantle, credit to elite skill execution throughout his junior career. There are so many different elements that make up that side of his game, too.

Lindsay sees the game differently to most, exhibiting extraordinary vision to identify targets in quick time, before leaning on his foot skills to hit up teammates. His decision making is usually first rate and it's why every team he plays for tries to feed him the ball as much as possible.

Further to his uniqueness, there is great variety in Lindsay's kicking. He can bring the play forward with penetrative long passes, spread it wide, or cut inboard to ask questions of the opposition in a range of ways. All the while, he runs at a high efficiency with his largely kick-first approach.

Generally playing a friendly free-roaming role off half-back, Lindsay is often sighted taking the kick-ins or streaming past teammates on the overlap. He demands possession no matter the situation, though sometimes invites unnecessary pressure when looking to put speed on the ball.

Still, his ability to hang off the back of stoppages and time his runs perfectly shows high footy IQ, on top of what he does with the ball. There are few - if any - playmakers and defensive distributors who can lay claim to being as effective as Lindsay. He cuts up the opposition going end-to-end.

While he has the half-back role down pat, Lindsay's ability to play midfield has come under the microscope. He handles the ball cleanly and knows where to find it, but perhaps is a little one-paced compared to other onballers. Further to that, contested and defensive work aren't among his strengths.

Lindsay has shown an ability to cop big hits and is capable of putting himself in positions to intercept, largely thanks to his smarts. However, he was tested by an uptake in speed and pressure this year, looking much better suited to an outside role where his ball use can shine.

75 per cent of Lindsay's possessions at the National Championships were uncontested, and he averaged just one tackle per game. While damaging on the attack, opposition teams looked to expose him going the other way and that's where he can improve in order to slot into an AFL side more readily - drop-off defenders don't often play that role straight off the bat.

DRAFT RANGE: 5-15

SUMMARY:

Lindsay fits into the category of player whose primary weapon is the best of the draft crop, that being his kicking. In a relatively shallow pool, it put him right up there among the top rungs during the early stages of the year. Many clubs will be in for a ball user of Lindsay’s quality. His vision and execution are on another level to most, and he shapes as a 200-game player who can reliably set up the play for years to come. Though, there will be question marks on his potential as a midfielder, with solitary half-backs usually considered dime-a-dozen – thus hindering his draft range. Still, he’ll make a club very happy within the first 15 or so selections. Expect him to slot in as a half-back or wingman.
