SNAPSHOT: “Western Australia’s leading key position draft prospect in 2024, Kayle Gerreyn has incredible physical attributes which have allowed him to dominate WAFL Colts games all year.” – Denholm Melrose
After impressing in four games as a bottom-ager last season, Gerreyn was selected as a member Western Australia’s Under 16 squad. He then went on to play 11 Colts games for West Perth in season 2024, as well as breaking through for two senior appearances in the Falcons’ League side. Gerreyn was a member of the West Australian Under 18 squad that impressed in the National Championships, where he averaged 13 disposals, nine hitouts, and kicked five goals in four outings. Gerreyn duly earned a National Draft Combine invitation, where he impressed with a sharp agility test time of 8.082 seconds.
PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:
STRENGTHS:
+ Agility
+ Contested marking
+ Kick penetration
+ Physicality
+ Production
+ Ruck craft
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Decision making
- Endurance
Gerreyn spent the majority of this season playing as a ruckman for West Perth’s Colts side and Western Australia, but at 199cm and with his booming kick he projects as a key forward in the long-term. Gerreyn has an eye for goal, and can slot them from anywhere on the field - even as far out as 60m from home. His contested marking ability is terrific, and he is willing to crash packs and bring the ball to ground if he doesn’t take the grab.
Gerreyn floats across the field with mobility which defies his size, which, coupled with his dual-footed field kicking on all parts of the ground make him a dynamic key position player. His ability to glide in and out of traffic, be involved in transition and even run with and carry the football himself are handy attributes for a big man to possess. Gerreyn is adept at picking off 45-degree kicks into the corridor to allow his side to switch and transition the ball freely, and has fantastic hands at contests that he uses to find teammates in space and direct the flow of the game forward.
As a ruckman, Gerreyn uses his big body and frame to move opposition rucks off their line and create space for himself to tap the ball to his midfielders. He has a fine vertical leap, but opts to physically battle with rucks, to own the space around the football and dictate where he wants to put it. Such technique worked well for him in a competition where his height and strength stood out, but may need to be fine-tuned at the next level when chopping out in the ruck.
Most impressive was Gerreyn’s ability to produce, week in, week out for the Falcons. Across his 11 Colts games this season he averaged 22 disposals, 22 hitouts, six marks, and kicked 18 goals. In back-to-back games in Rounds 16 and 18, Gerreyn collected 30 disposals, had 30-plus hitouts and kicked multiple goals. He took over six marks on seven occasions. Only once did he not kick a goal and in seven games he converted multiples. Gerreyn stuffs the stat sheet with a mindset to dominate, and he looks to impress each time he takes to the field, regardless of the colours he is wearing.
At the next level Gerreyn will need to improve his running capabilities and fitness base, but that should not be a problem with a full AFL pre-season. Another thing he will need to enhance is his decision making. There were a few times throughout games where he looked to give off to teammates who were not in positions to receive, and he sometimes tends to rush into erratic kicks, which sees his sometimes brilliant ball use waver.
DRAFT RANGE: 30-50
SUMMARY:
The jury remains out regarding where Gerreyn will be selected. Some see him as a top-tier key position talent whilst others think the Colts competition was not good enough for him to be considered as an early pick in the draft. His physical talents ensure he will almost certainly play at the next level, but can he continue to develop, and can he transition into a full-time forward role? With such questions remain to be answered, and in a widely talented crop, expect Gerreyn to be on the radar from the second round, onwards.
