SNAPSHOT: “The 2024 AFLW Draft bolter, Paterson produced an incredible season for Swan Districts earning a place in the state squad where she held her own with great inside work and nice footy smarts in and around the contest.”
Without a doubt, Lily Paterson was one of, if not the, biggest improver in 2024. She showed promising signs as a bottom-ager, largely in spurts playing forward, but a midfield move for Swan Districts prompted a huge change in the top-ager as she quickly became one of the most prolific players in the WAFL Women’s.
Paterson is relatively new to the sport, having picked up the code a few years ago after coming from a dual soccer and netball background. She was invited to try out at the Swans, and since then changed her opinion and never looked back. Learning the sport took a little while which is why there was somewhat of a slow burn for the ball-winner, but once it all clicked, it was evident to see.
Coming into the year, Paterson was looking to rack up a “couple of best on grounds”, have “good stats” and most importantly enjoy the year, and it’s fair to say the midfielder ticked all those boxes.
After being more of a talented but inconsistent forward last season where Paterson averaged 9.5 disposals, 1.1 marks, 3.5 tackles and 1.7 inside 50s – as well as booting six goals from 15 games – the Swan Districts 173cm prospect took to a new midfield role like a duck to water.
Her work over the off-season was evident as Paterson would go on to blow everyone away with how much she had improved. By the end of the year, Paterson would averaged 23.3 disposals, 3.7 marks, 4.1 tackles and 2.5 inside 50s off the same amount of games as the year before.
After missing out on the West Australian Summer squad, Paterson forced her way in with her form, and continued it into the national carnival. One of the better players to miss out on All-Australian honours, Paterson worked hard despite the Sandgropers ending the carnival winless, averaging 21.0 disposals, 4.7 clearances, 5.3 tackles and 3.0 inside 50s.

PROFILE:
Lily Paterson would not have been on any draft boards at the start of the season, but within a few weeks it was evident she had what it took to go to the next level with her football. By the end of the year, Paterson had received an AFLW National Draft Combine invite, and with good reason.
Paterson's game is underpinned by her footballing skills and smarts, which is ironic considering her lack of time in the code compared to many of her peers. Having largely played as a forward for the Swan Districts League side the year before, Paterson gained a full-time midfield gig and was simply sensational off the back of a huge preseason.
While not the quickest player going around - both speed and agility were noted as improvements from Paterson preseason - the Swan Districts midfielder does not allow that to define the way she goes about it. Her hands in close are clean and her kicking - particularly when given time and space - is also quite potent. When under pressure she rush a touch, but no more so than your average inside midfielder.
Her best work is done when in space she can assess the options and hit targets further afield. With her right boot both penetrating and accurate, she can make things happen by foot, or link up by hand well. From a footballing sense, she has the smarts to get into the right spots and win the ball, especially around the coalface.
Time and time again across multiple levels, Paterson just seemed to be wherever the ball went, and she had it on a string. Capable of playing off a flank at both ends of the ground thanks to her understanding of the play and her smarts with ball in hand, Paterson glides around the ground even if it is not at a fast pace.
The top-ager covers the field strongly, and when not in possession is a two-way runner to help out the defence. Her tackling numbers paint a picture of her defensive work, and she is not afraid to get her hands dirty in that regard. That balance between inside and outside ball-winning aids in her being a consistent and reliable midfielder.
Speed is always a concern for clubs at times, but she has shown she is more than capable to finding the ball and executing cleanly. In front of goal however, Paterson does have a deficiency, kicking a lacklustre 6.10 for the season - and a few non-scores which was largely impacted by six behinds against West Perth.
On that day, Paterson had 37 disposals and six marks, and while not as efficient as usual, was the first of four 30-plus games, including another 37-disposal haul in the final round of the regular season against Peel Thunder. All-in-all, Paterson showed throughout the year she has the traits to translate her game to the elite level.
DRAFT RANGE: 25-40
SUMMARY:
Lily Paterson is one of the AFLW Draft bolters in 2024 and is a perfect selection for a club needing a readymade midfielder who can fill a variety of roles. A player difficult to predict where she would land, a second round pick seems about the mark, with some great traits, and also improvements that can be made to go to another level.
