SUMMARY: Martin Frederick is a small, running defender tied to Port Adelaide via the clubs Next Generation Academy. Frederick represented South Australia at the National Under 18 Championships and was a prominent member of the states' backline, playing all four games and averaging 13.6 disposals, 2.5 marks and 1.8 tackles. Frederick was also lucky enough to win a second medal for the year, with Woodville-West Torrens taking out the SANFL Under-18 premiership. Frederick, of South Sudan heritage, provides plenty of run and carry from his half-back role, generating rebound and is always looking to use his speed and agility to move the ball up-field. His 3.11 second 20m sprint time isn't necessarily reflective of the excitement he creates with ball in hand. Frederick has a high upside, but is sub-180cm, does not have a huge leap and thus may be restricted to only retaining opposition small forwards unless clubs see another potential role for him, perhaps on a wing or up forward. Still raw, he will take time to develop at the next level but has a high upside and the potential to excite fans with his eye-catching run and dare from the defensive-50.
