SNAPSHOT: “A super athletic tall who can played across all three lines and is competitive in the air.”

Meg Lappin is the daughter of three-time Brisbane premiership player, and alongside twin sister Ally, is eligible to the Lions as a father-daughter prospect. While a raw talent in terms of her output to-date, Lappin certainly has the traits that can be developed for the future and is viewed as more of a long-term prospect.

Lappin is a prospect out of the Newtown & Chilwell Football Club in AFL Barwon, a popular starting point for many players within the Geelong region. The athletic tall played 60 games across her first five seasons, with her 2020 year of course cut short by the global pandemic. However by the time 2022 rolled around, Lappin was becoming a household future talent, named among the best nine times from 13 games for Newtown & Chilwell Under 15s.

Her form was so impressive she stepped up to the Under 18s on a couple of occasions as well, and participated in teh V/Line Cup for the Barwon Cats. There, she stood out amongst the best in what was a fairly strong future Falcons lineup, and Lappin funnelled into the Geelong program the following season.

Making her debut in the Futures squad, Lappin played two games there, then both matches for Vic Country at the AFL National Development Championships, before spending much of 2023 back at Newtown & Chilwell. A late season debut in the Coates Talent League Girls Under 18s program saw Lappin add a further two games of experience to her name ahead of the 2024 season.

Her bottom-age campaign included two appearances for her school, Sacred Heart College, and though she made her senior debut at Newtown & Chilwell, predominantly played through the Talent League. Lappin averaged 6.6 disposals, 1.5 marks, 4.5 hitouts, 2.3 tackles and booted 10 goals as that forward/ruck for the Falcons.

In 2025, Lappin added another 14 Falcons games to her CV, averaging 11.0 disposals, 2.6 marks, 3.9 hitouts and 2.5 tackles, spending time largely in defence or through the ruck more so than inside 50 like the year before. She earned a sport with Vic Country where she played three games for an averaged of 4.7 disposals, 1.3 marks and 2.0 rebound 50s out of the back half.

By the end of the year, Lappin would earn a State Draft Combine invitation and show off her athletic traits and keep herself in draft contention. While cousin Sunny has earned plenty of attention with her year, Meg looms as a potential late value pickup for the Lions.

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Production
- Kicking consistency

A player who has plenty more development left in her, Lappin is one you would define as a raw tall. She was still very much a project player near the start of her bottom-age season, but had a promising 2024 where she showed enough as a marking forward to suggest she could take her game to another level. While less flashy in 2025 playing that defensive post role, Lappin still provided Brisbane fans with some exciting highlights.

If you're a fan of a 179cm player running like the wind, then Lappin will no doubt be one who can get spectators excited. She is not afraid to tuck the ball under the arm, take off and blast down the field from half-back, or when she is rucking, can act as a fourth midfielder and follow-up her work by exploding from the stoppages.

In the air, Lappin competes well and is good at bringing the ball to ground when she doesn't mark it, and her follow-up work in terms of her defensive pressure is sound. She can compete at gorund level even though the air is where she feels more comfortable, and unlike a lot of players at her height, is able to get involved in transitional plays consistently.

These traits alone are why Lappin is held in a good place in terms of her draft possibilities, because while not tipped to go high, has enough that a club can be confident to work on her areas of improvement. She is not a massive ball-winner by any stretch, but she has those 'moments' that catch the eye whether she is blasting down the field or bringing it to ground and competing well.

It is that final execution element that could be improved, with Lappin able to kick the ball long, but just directing it more precisely, particularly at speed is where she can come undone at times. Other than that, it is really just building on the traits she already has, and if she can do that, then there is no reason she cannot make another jump in her development at the top level.

It will be fascinating to see where clubs view Lappin's best position, having played at both ends and pinch-hit through the ruck. It is likely she will play either forward or back with the second ruck role and develop from there.

DRAFT RANGE: Late

SUMMARY:

Meg Lappin is a long-term prospect with some upside that if Brisbane opted to nominate her for a father-daughter selection then she could prove a valuable addition. With plenty still to build on, Lappin has the athletic base and versatility that will excite plenty about her game.
