SNAPSHOT: “A talented forward/midfielder who oozes X-factor and boasts terrific defensive pressure.”

Mischa Barwin is one of the more exciting players in the 2025 AFLW Draft crop with tricks and traits that catch the eye wherever she plays. While still developing aspects of her game, Barwin provides some unforgettable highlights and has the athletic traits that match her footballing skills.

Barwin’s football journey “started with the boys” at Dodges Ferry back in 2017 and she moved through the pathway in that manner over the next three seasons. While many others missed out on 2020 due to the global pandemic, Barwin played 13 games and was name\d among the best 10 times for the South East Suns.

Following a taste of Under 15s action that year, Barwin moved over to Lauderdale in the Southern Tasmanian Junior Football League where she played 18 games and booted 28 goals in the competition. The two-way forward was making a name for herself and earned a spot in the interleague side the following season. She would go on to boot 20 goals in 14 games for Lauderdale in the Under 17.5s, and win a flag alongside good friend Priya Bowering.

The two would go hand-in-hand progressing through the pathways over the next three seasons, and though Barwin had to wait an extra year to make her Tasmania Devils debut, made it worth the weight. Prior to that five goals across two games in the National Development Championships and All-Australian honours beckoned, as well as making another grand final for Lauderdale but falling short.

When 2024 rolled around, Barwin further made her mark, averaging 17.0 disposals, 3.4 marks, 5.8 tackles, 4.0 inside 50s and booting eight goals in 13 games for the Devils, as well as playing all three matches for the Allies. She spent time up forward, on a wing and on-ball across the last couple of seasons, lifting her averages in both the Coates Talent League Girls and National Championships this year.

The National Academy member ended the season with a National Draft Combine invite to the surprise of no one, and she showed off her well-rounded athletic profile in the process.

STRENGTHS:

+ Agility
+ Athleticism
+ Clean hands
+ Forward craft
+ Defensive pressure
+ Endurance
+ X-factor

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Kicking consistency
- Composure

Barwin's game is well-balanced between footballing and athletic traits, and starting with the former, she boasts clean hands and some really impressive tricks by foot. While her kicking could be more consistent at times - largely due to her composure, Barwin is a crafty talent who is capable of using both sides of her right boot and weight her kicks well.

When under pressure - which sometimes she invites with her confidence to back herself - she can sometimes blaze away or be forced to bomb the ball forward, but with any time and space, Barwin can cut the opposition to ribbons. Often you never quite know what she is going to do next with a high-level of forward craft and goal sense anywhere close to the big sticks.

Barwin's game is aided by her outstanding all-round athletic profile from her speed to her agility and endurance. While not necessarily explosive over the first few metres, once she gets into space, Barwin hits a top speed nicely. Her agility is what really stands out, easily capable of breaking a few ankles en route to goal, and usually multiple times in a game.

While having those athletic traits is not too surprising for a small forward, Barwin also has a fantastic endurance base from which she draws from. The Tasmanian is able to cover the ground well, work up in a high half-forward role and move both inside, or run off a wing. Her ability to link up between the midfield and attack is what sets her apart as she can get back and help defensively, then storm forward and be on the end of the transitional play to score.

Defensively, Barwin is outstanding, which is another big tick and point of difference. A lot of players who have the ability that the Lauderdale prospect does, would usually rely on their offensive output, but Barwin thrives on her ferociousness and competitive nature. Whether it is at ground level or competing in the air, the Tasmanian will fight the good fight and go in when she needs to, then spread when it is her turn to be the link in the chain.

Going forward, Barwin has plenty of exciting traits that catch the eye and the consistency with her kicking and composure as well will only further help her get better. Barwin is a talented prospect and right in the likely first round contention off the back of a couple of great seasons with the Devils and Allies.

DRAFT RANGE: 12-20

SUMMARY:

Mischa Barwin is among the top-end talents in this year’s AFLW Draft, with the forward-midfielder likely to land somewhere in the first round. Her upside is evident, and given the fact she will need to relocate regardless, clubs across the country will not be scared off by the prospect. One who could steadily improve at the elite level.
