Summary
SNAPSHOT: “An intercepting half-back with terrific run-and-carry and the ability to go into the middle.”
Mizuki Brothwell has gone from strength to strength over the last few seasons, rising from local football to the National Academy and playing for Vic Country. The Dandenong Stingrays tall defender competes well in the air reading the play and then distributing it effectively down the field with a number of huge games coming in 2025.
Brothwell is a relative newcomer to Australian rules football taking up the chance to play with twin sister Nalu at Balnarring just three seasons ago in 2023. There, Brothwell played 15 games and booted four goals, named among the best seven times through the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League (MPJFL).
Little did she or her sister know, their rise to the top of the sub-elite junior level would be swift. She represented the MPJFL in interleague midway through her first season, and played in the Diversity All Stars game against Vic Metro in June – her mother is Japanese – alongside her twin. They caught the eye of Dandenong Stingrays through their performances across all those levels and earned a spot on the Stingrays’ list the next season.
Brothwell played 15 games in her debut year with the Stingrays, averaging 11.5 disposals, 1.8 marks, 2.1 tackles, 2.1 inside 50s and 1.7 rebound 50s. Her form throughout that year earned Brothwell a spot in the National Under 17 Futures game where she impressed on GMHBA Stadium enough to be named in the National Academy ahead of her top-age campaign.
A move to Red Hill locally to play in the MPFNL Division Two competition occurred, and she also represented her school Padua College in the Herald Sun Shield. At Talent League level, Brothwell went up another level again, earning 16.9 disposals, 2.6 marks, 3.8 tackles, 2.6 inside 50s and 2.5 rebound 50s. She also was sent forward in the last game of the regular season against Gippsland Power and kicked her first Talent League goal.
Brothwell would go on to play in the grand final, and though not successful, was one of her sides’ best through both that and the preliminary final defeat of Oakleigh. At the AFLW Under 18 National Championships, Brothwell managed 16.3 disposals, 2.8 marks, 2.3 tackles and 3.8 rebound 50s, holding her own against the best from the country.
At the end of the season, she earned a National Draft Combine invitation alongside her sister and has positioned herself among the top 30 players in the AFLW Draft.

STRENGTHS:
+ Run-and-carry
+ Intercept marking
+ Kicking
+ Reading the play
+ Versatility
+ Composure
+ Upside
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Contested marking
- Midfield craft
Brothwell's game is highlighted by her ability to run-and-carry out of defence. The way she wins the ball is through a manner of different means including intercepting in the air, mopping up in defence or via handball receive. Her running game has always been evident and she loves to take it on and break down the opposition defence.
Similarly, her intercepting game - which has developed nicely in tandem through her superb reading of the play - has also gotten better over the last 18 months. She consistently knows where to go and when to have the most impact on the game. Her preliminary final against Oakleigh was outstanding and she continually got back to help her fellow defenders out.
From a ball use perspective, Brothwell's kicking has really developed to become a weapon of sorts. She is not afraid to bite off riskier kicks, and she has been looking for the best possible option rather than the easiest one. By hand she is clean, and she also remains composed even under pressure, working her way through situations and trying not to just bomb the ball away.
Perhaps an underrated quality of Brothwell's is her defensive versatility. She can play on talls or smalls as she is athletic enough without being elite in any one category, but also has the capability to be a shut down defender, or an offensive running tall. Importantly, she is capable of doing both at the same time, nullifying her direct opponent then bursting down the ground to drive the ball forward.
While her aerial game is very good from an intercepting perspective, Brothwell is still developing her contested marking. She is not as effective with contact coming - as one would expect - and there are stronger opponents who can outmuscle her in those situations. The Stingrays defender can continue to work on that aspect at the elite level, as well as the midfield craft she began developing.
To ensure she had a second position going up to AFLW level, Brothwell did earn minutes on-ball, and while she was pretty solid, she would not be in that position at the top level straight away. Her craft around stoppages is still a work in progress, though as a second or particularly third possession winner darting to the outside, she can be effective.
Finally, Brothwell's upside - considering her rate-of-development thus far - is enormous. She has barely had much time in the pathway compared to her peers and she has come on in leaps and bounds. No doubt the potential scope in her game will excite AFLW clubs.
DRAFT RANGE: 20-30
SUMMARY:
Mizuki Brothwell has plenty of potential going forward and should land somewhere inside the top 30. Her intercept marking, kicking and smart decision making all are big ticks, and while she is still developing aspects of her game, has come a long way over a quick amount of time.
