SNAPSHOT: “An athletic forward with clean hands and great defensive pressure who has shot up draft boards the last 18 months.”
Nalu Brothwell has gone from strength to strength over the last couple of seasons, coming into the elite junior pathway later than some, but made up for lost time alongside twin sister Mizuki. While her sister earned a spot in the National Academy, Brothwell got her chance to play for Australia due to injuries, and has carved out a very good junior career in her own right.
To understand how rapid the Brothwell’s rise to the National Draft Combine state is, it paints a picture when one thinks they only took up football in 2023. The now AFLW Draft prospect came from humble beginnings by trying her hand down with Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula. While also being able to play for her school – Padua College – Brothwell booted 18 goals in 14 games for the Thunder, with a seven-goal haul in August of that year a standout performance.
A month earlier, Brothwell had represented the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League (MPJFL) in the Under 16s representative series, while also playing in the Vic Country Diversity All Stars game. Her mother was born in Japan, which meant she qualifies for the Medleys team alongside her sister. That experience was followed by a late season debut against the Geelong Falcons, and though it was only one game, paved the way for a breakout 2024 campaign.
Brothwell averaged 11.9 disposals, 1.7 marks, 4.9 tackles, 2.4 inside 50s and kickeed 14 goals across six games cementing her spot in the front half of the ground. She played on GMHBA Stadium as part of the Under 17 Futures game, and though not initially selected in the National Academy, earned a call-up spot for the second match.
At Coates Talent League Girls level, Brothwell picked up 15.2 disposals, 2.8 marks, 5.2 tackles and 2.5 inside 50s, while kicking a goal a game from her 13 matches. She often handed plenty off as well, and then at the national carnival, kicked two goals from four matches, also averaging 15.3 disposals, 2.3 marks and 3.3 tackles for Vic Country.
By the time the season was done and dusted, Brothwell earned a National Draft Combine invite alongside her sister and cemented her spot as a potential top 30 prospect. It has been an incredible rise for the player who only just finished her third season of football.

STRENGTHS:
+ Aerial ability
+ Defensive pressure
+ Vision
+ Clean hands
+ Athleticism
+ Rate-of-development
+ Scoreboard impact
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Goalkicking accuracy
- Kicking precision
- Strength
Brothwell's rate-of-development in the space of three seasons will have clubs anticipating even greater things at AFLW level, so there will be no shortage of interest in the teenager. With that natural rise expedited over the course of only a couple of full Coates Talent League Girls seasons, Brothwell enters the 2025 AFLW Draft well prepared for the future.
First and foremost, her aerial ability and knack to clunk marks and then set up her teammates, often playing on from half-forward and then putting it to advantage. While her sister is the more efficient ball user, Brothwell is the stronger contested mark. She took just under one per game and for an athletic, slightly undersized forward, it is quite impressive.
What Brothwell does do well is she is capable of bringing the ball to ground and then pouncing. Her defensive pressure is superb, and she can force turnovers, then usually generates scores off of that. Her vision once she has the ball also stands out, as Brothwell does not just bomb it long. She will scan the forward 50 and usually put it to the advantage of a teammate even if not precise.
The scoreboard impact she has is also up there with the better forwards, kicking 13 goals in as many games for the Stingrays, and also setting up countless opportunities for her teammates. She is not afraid to hand it off to others in better positions, and creates indirect scoreboard pressure in that way. On the scoring front, Brothwell does leave a few goals out there, also kicking 15 behinds - and a few not registered scores - as that finishing polish is still being adjusted.
That is not to say she can not kick some ripping majors, including an absolute pearler for Vic Country gathering and snapping around her body to bounce home from a forward stoppage. But she can continue to build more strength in order to stand up more effectively in tackles or be even more effective with her bone-crunching tackles. She has the athleticism down pat, so can build that strength element.
The other improvement Brothwell can make is to her consistency. At her best she is brilliant and a match-winner, and while she has improved that consistency component in 2025, it is always an area she can further build on. From an athletic point of view outside her jumping, Brothwell is fairly good across the board without being outstanding. She moves well, can be evasive and has a solid foundational tank which is a positive for the future.
DRAFT RANGE: 20-40
SUMMARY:
Nalu Brothwell has shown incredible development over the three seasons she has played football and just two full ones at the sub-elite junior level. Her aerial ability and smarts in the front half are invaluable to her side, and Brothwell should land somewhere in the second round of the AFL.
