SNAPSHOT: “A mobile and versatile key position prospect who missed most of his top-age season, but has more than enough quality to make the next level.” – Michael Alvaro
Noah Mraz entered his top-age season as one of the nation’s most highly touted tall prospects. He had represented Vic Country across the Under 16, 17, and 18 age groups between 2022-23, which duly put him on track for National Academy selection in 2024. Mraz made his Coates Talent League debut as a 16-year-old and went on to convert his one appearance to 12 as a bottom-ager.
Throughout his campaign last year, Mraz took on roles against the likes of draftees Archer Reid and Jordan Croft, and earned a call-up for Vic Country’s Under 18s. He was then part of the National Futures game on AFL Grand Final day. Mraz’s 2024 preseason was scuppered by a head knock which saw him placed under concussion protocols, forcing him out of Round 1.
The mobile and competitive tall got back on the park for Dandenong’s Round 2 and 3 fixtures, and had the honour of representing Australia in the National Academy’s opening game against Coburg. Unfortunately, he then unearthed a navicular fracture which ruled him out for the remainder of the season. By his account, he likely played all three games this year with the injury.
Despite desperate efforts to get back on the park, Mraz instead set his sights on being able to test at the National Draft Combine. He did so, performing well in the vertical jumps and agility test. Throughout the rehab process he had experience coaching Dandenong’s backline, while also working on his upper-body strength and ground balls.
PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:
STRENGTHS:
+ Aerial ability
+ Competitiveness
+ Mobility
+ Reading the play
+ Skills
+ Versatility
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Size
- Speed
Mraz projects as a key position prospect who can play in each third of the ground. He found a home down back, but provides a decent chop-out in the ruck and had planned to go forward to exploit favourable matchups throughout the year. His absence in the Vic Country lineup was pronounced, as he would have been the lone genuine key back above 195cm, which the side arguably lacked.
In his two Coates Talent League appearances this year, Mraz had the confidence to play relatively loosely off the opponent's back shoulder, trusting his reading of the play to react and impact the contest. He was challenged by fellow Vic Country tall Floyd Burmeister in the second of those games, with the GWV forward utilising his pace advantage and thriving off the freedom he was afforded.
Still, Mraz is quite a mobile tall who showcases his sound mechanics in possession. His skills are quite clean by hand and foot, able to join in on transitional passages and help move the ball out of defence. That quality also translates to his work in the ruck, where he can follow up on his initial efforts at the contest, or roam around the ground to impact with his aerial presence.
Even without the benefit of a full season, Mraz returned to showcase his running base at the National Draft Combine. His 2km time trial effort of 6:32 rates highly for a player his size, as does his 8.468-second agility test. Such numbers are useful offensively, but also help him close in on the contest and impact defensively.
Mraz is quite the competitor aerially. He backs his defensive craft and is rarely beaten one-on-one, able to split aerial duels and bring the ball to ground when the option to intercept mark doesn't present. His 88cm running vertical jump proves he has the spring to be a secondary ruck, on top of what that trait offers as a contested marker.
Given his limited exposure as a top-ager, picking out glaring improvement areas for Mraz is difficult. He aimed to add size to his frame and certainly did so this year. There will be queries coming off such a serious injury, and while his work ethic to rehabilitate has been exceptional, whether he can return with the same explosiveness in the way of speed and leaping remains to be seen.
DRAFT RANGE: 30-50
SUMMARY:
Mraz is one of the unknowns amongst this year’s crop given he only managed three appearances this year. He showcased plenty of quality and desirable traits as a bottom-ager, while his hunger to get back into the action and at least test for the combine this year was admirable. Versatile talls who move well, are skilled, and play at either end of the ground don’t grow on trees. The element of risk comes with his lack of exposure off a long-term injury, especially in a deep draft full of proven prospects, but Mraz could be an absolute steal in the second or beyond.
