SNAPSHOT: “A natural footballer with plenty of likeable traits, Lacy has proven herself as both a defender and midfielder boasting a contested appetite.”

Olivia Lacy has had her share of interruptions the last two seasons, but looms as a really good value pickup late in the draft. Having shown great footballing traits as a bottom-ager, she had an injury-interrupted start to the season, but returned to play a couple of games for Vic Country and earn a State Draft Combine invite.

Lacy is a career-footballer, having started almost a decade ago for the Huntly Hawks in the Bendigo Junior Football League (BJFL). Playing 13 games in her first season, Lacy was hooked and though she moved to Quarry Hill and eventually Sandhurst just before the global pandemic, remained strong with her football. While 2020 limited her to just two games, Lacy was already showing signs of a promising player.

When the action return in 2021, the 14-year-old was among the best in bost matches and hitting the scoreboard too. A huge season for Sandhurst Under 16s followed the next year, named best in 10 of her 14 games, while earning a spot on the BJFL interleague side.

Her form rolled on into her double bottom-age season, starring for Sandhurst en route to a dominant premiership win over Strathfieldsaye in 2023. Earlier that year, Lacy made her debut for Bendigo Pioneers at both Under 16s and Under 18s level, while also running out for Vic Country at the National Development Championships.

From there, Lacy only went from strength-to-strength, playing 12 games for Bendigo at Talent League Girls level and averaging 12.4 disposals, 2.3 marks, 5.8 tackles and 3.0 rebound 50s, predominantly as a defender. However the natural midfielder moved into that role – while still spending time in defence – in 2025, where here numbers booted to 18.6 disposals, 3.9 marks and 6.3 tackles, overcoming an early season injury which restricted her to eight games.

Lacy did manage to crack in for two Vic Country clashes – as a defender – averaging 9.5 disposals, 1.5 marks and 2.0 tackles, finishing the year in a much more positive light after concussion ruled her out of her 2024 season finish, and Under 17 Futures chance. Still, the form she has shown over a number of seasons earned her a State Draft Combine invite.

STRENGTHS:

+ Defensive pressure
+ Skills
+ Contested game
+ Aerial ability
+ Versatility
+ Decision making

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Athleticism
- Speed

Lacy's game begins in defence, because her defensive mindset is clear for all to see. That ground level pressure, as well as her aerial contest stands out, and she is competitive as anyone going around. Aside from some knocks on her athleticism and speed, she is really well-rounded and ticks a lot of boxes that clubs are looking for into the future.

From a land perspective, Lacy is a tenacious tackler, and has proven to be just that, averaging 5.6 tackles across her 29 Coates Talent League Girls games. The defensive pressure is an attribute that she adopts wherever she plays, and once she wins the ball, is generally clean by hand or foot with her ball use. She was still developing that cleanliness at the start of the year, but as a whole it is really solid and she can scoop up a loose ball with the best of them.

In the air, Lacy competes well, and while she is a little undersized against the bigger players who might have higher leaps, competing one-on-one against similarly built opponents is something that the Bendigo Pioneers prospect can handle rather well. She positions herself and uses her body to get in the right spot, and if she doesn't mark it, she will bring it to ground to follow-up.

With ball in hand, Lacy is clean and neat as a rule, with her handballs out of stoppages or through traffic particularly impressive, while her kicking is penetrative and well-weighted most of the time. Essentially, from a skills perspective, Lacy uses the ball well and makes good decisions which is usually a great combination for any player.

As mentioned above, the knock for Lacy is her lack of speed or athleticism which is always an elephant in the room for clubs. There has to be something though, as no one is perfect and Lacy just has to keep building on those areas. Like the common debate of 'footballer vs athlete', the midfielder/defender firmly sits in the former, but she is also not too bad in the latter.

She would be below average, but there are others worse off, so she plays to her strengths and with her clean hands is able to still impact games even when under pressure from opponents. Additionally, her strength when confronted shines through, and if clubs overlook that lack of pace, then they will see she has a lot of very impressive traits otherwise.

DRAFT RANGE: 40-60

SUMMARY:

Olivia Lacy is a player who is tough to judge where she might land in the draft. It is tipped to be later on, but her footballing traits are really desirable for clubs, while her athletic knockbacks are not majorly concerning compared to some others. If picked up, Lacy would be a great addition to continue working on those athletic areas, while showing off her footballing skills.
