SNAPSHOT: “One of the most consistent midfielders of the draft crop, with fantastic football IQ and deceptive athleticism”

Proud Tasmanian Priya Bowering was earmarked as a player to watch for this year’s draft crop a number of seasons ago. Having been named in the Allies squad – bit not playing a game – in 2023 as an Under 16s talent, Bowering was coming off a starring Development Championships where she unsurprisingly was named in a forward pocket of the All-Australian team. Teammate Harriet Bingley took out the MVP, but Bowering was the sole Tasmanian in the representative honour.

It would not be the last time Bowering was named in a spot that was not her actual position, with the Lauderdale player slotting onto a wing at the Under 18s equivalent this year. Bowering has played on-ball, forward and back, but was named in the only role she was yet to test herself in. Still a predominant midfielder, Bowering enjoyed the challenges of other positions, and even said post-season she would have loved more opportunities in them.

From a more local perspective, Bowering has been a career player at Lauderdale, where she has run out for the red and black since she was 10, playing 90 games between the junior and senior sides, including five this year where she starred to be named amongst the best on each occasion. Though dominant at local level, it was clear Bowering was destined for bigger things.

Representation honours followed through the Allies pathway, and then National Academy, where alongside Mischa Barwin, Bowering has loomed as a first round talent – possible top 10 prospect – from the Apple Isle. Her consistency over the last few years has been outstanding, and her floor is as high as any other prospect in the draft.

Watching Bowering, it is clear what some of her strengths are, but she also has a lot of deceptive abilities that go beyond being just a natural ball-winning midfielder. When tested in other roles, she can excel, and even though midfield is where she will likely land at AFLW level, her strength overhead and one-on-one ability with the athleticism to match, Bowering is one who will go far in the top grade.

STRENGTHS:

+ Contested work
+ Strength
+ Clean hands
+ Kicking
+ Footy IQ
+ Vision
+ Athleticism

IMPROVEMENTS:

- On-field explosiveness
- Endurance

Bowering is one of the most well-balanced players across the draft crop, and as mentioned boasts an incredibly high floor. Essentially, the lowest performances she puts out are still at a high level, with a rare consistency for whatever team or level she plays with or at. Throughout the last few seasons, Bowering has developed her game to be one that is not just inside, but around the ground and in valuable positions.

While in the past, the Tasmanian has rested forward, she spent significant time there, as well as at centre half-back where she could show more of her athletic traits. From a numbers perspective she has enormous upside given Bowering has clocked a 3.22-second 20m sprint, which is mighty impressive for a midfielder whose game is centred around her power and strength.

Usually players with Bowering's stronger build with break tackles through that sheer strength and power, but she has the explosiveness - albeit untapped on-field - that can see her also breakaway from would-be tacklers. Utilising her athletic gifts - particularly her speed - is an improvement for Bowering, who has shown she can put the pedal down and motor away compared to a lot of opponents.

Outside of her athletic profile, Bowering's strengths lean to an inside game with her clean hands, footy IQ and vision all key components. The Tasmanian has safe hands at ground level, using her strong frame to win the hardball or a disputed ball, then find the right option outside of the congestion. Her long, looping handballs are also an eye-catcher, and her kicking from stoppages has also improved.

Comparing her ball use even from last year to this year, her kicking - which has always had a great technique - has refined under pressure. Last year with time and space she was damaging by foot, but often hacked or rushed the kick under pressure from the stoppage. In 2025, Bowering has used extra time to assess her options then deliver the ball to a teammate downfield, which has further strengthened her game.

While her ball use has become a major strength and key element given her inside ball-winning abilities, Bowering is just as strong in the air as she is at ground level. With the strength to win in a one-on-one stationary battle, as well as the vertical leap to clunk the ball overhead, Bowering often looks like a tall forward with the way she confidently flies for the mark. One of the best aerialists for her size, she could more than cope with starting out as a forward before moving on-ball.

Aside from using her explosiveness more on-field, Bowering's other continual improvement is her endurance. She is at a really solid level, but it still has ways to improve that will enable her to cover the ground faster, and for longer. Given her suite of strengths and very few weaknesses, Bowering is one of those players you have to nit-pick to really find anything to improve.

Finally, the other element that will impress clubs is Bowering's character. A social and bubbly person, Bowering fits the mould of more outgoing prospects that get elevated in their draft range due to the ease in which can they fit within social circles. A constant centre amongst a Venn Diagram of friends from around the country for the National Academy, Bowering is one who will have to relocate regardless and therefore the ease at which she can slot into any playing group will impress club recruiters.

DRAFT RANGE: 8-15

SUMMARY:

Priya Bowering is an easy first-round choice. She has minimal weaknesses and an array of strengths that stand out wherever she plays. While others might utilise their athletic weapons better, Bowering is one of the most consistent players in the draft crop, and a top 10 selection would certainly not be surprising for a player of her talents.
