Summary
SNAPSHOT: “A balanced midfield prospect with a strong frame and lovely kick, Reece Torrent shapes as a potential value option late in the draft.”
A classy operator who has somewhat slid under the radar this year, Reece Torrent has put together a strong season, impressing for Western Australia at State level before making his senior debut for Peel Thunder.
The 18-year-old announced himself as one to watch after a terrific finals series in his bottom-age campaign, headlined by a match-winning 24-disposal, two-goal Grand Final display that helped Peel Thunder clinch the Colts premiership.
Having trained with Peel’s senior squad over the pre-season, Torrent began his draft year in decent fashion, netting a call-up to the WA 18s Squad. He was one of the State’s better performers in the carnival, averaging 17 disposals across four matches, playing across the wing and half-forward.
He returned to Peel and featured at Reserves level, before being rewarded with his League debut in the final home-and-away game. It was just rewards for Torrent, who has always looked a class above his peers at Colts level, and a fitting end to his accomplished junior career that may see him destined for higher honours.
STRENGTHS:
+ Class
+ Creativity
+ Kicking
+ Physicality
+ Poise
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Production
- Speed
A skilful and stylish player, Torrent’s best traits are shown when the ball is in his hands. At his best, he oozes genuine class and stands out as player who appears to have more time on the ball than others. Whether he is under pressure at a stoppage or playing out on the wide expanses of the wing, Torrent is rarely flustered by his surroundings and shows great poise under pressure to make good decisions and not rush his disposal.
While not an explosive player, it is not uncommon to see Torrent find space loping away from congestion and swinging onto his left foot. In this sense, his stoppage work and ability to go from inside to out is not dissimilar the way in which former Fremantle legend David Mundy used to effortlessly stride away from the contest despite lacking genuine pace.
With ball in hand, Torrent is generally a lovely user, delivering with excellent penetration and accuracy on his left foot. In a similar vein to his general on-field demeanour, he has a free-flowing, lucid kicking style that is pleasant on the eye. He likes to take something off the kick to draw his teammate into a pocket of space, rather than attempting to drill a bullet pass, making him an excellent player to lead to as a forward.
The Peel Thunder prospect will often make something happen in the front half. He is an excellent exponent of the inside-50 kick, showing good creativity and execution to find a spare player to set up a set shot at goal. He is also a handy goal kicker himself, having kicked multiple majors on five occasions throughout his Colts career despite primarily playing in the midfield.
At 184cm and 83kg, Torrent is solidly built and plays with a healthy amount of physicality, often bodying his opponent off the ball and showing good core strength to maintain his footing in tackles. Having had a taste of senior WAFL football, he looks reasonably well placed from a physical perspective for an 18-year-old heading onto an AFL list.
While he is a creative ball-user, Torrent will look to improve is ball-winning abilities. Although his disposal numbers are certainly solid enough, he is not a ball-magnet and there are games where he can struggle to accumulate, leaving observers thinking how much more influential he could have been if he could have found an extra 5-10 touches. He can also appear one-paced at times, particularly against more dynamic and athletic opponents who can switch gears more regularly.
DRAFT RANGE: Late/Rookie
SUMMARY:
It does not take an extensive viewing of Torrent to see why he is a draftable talent, with his skills, poise and football nous giving him a sound base of attributes to be a solid player at the next level. In what is widely considered to be a shallow draft pool, he presents as a viable option for clubs looking to bolster their list with a classy player in the latter rounds.
