SNAPSHOT: “A clean and competitive dual-sided midfielder who applied enormous defensive pressure to her opponents.”

Renee Morgan is a natural footballer who is really well balanced across the board and if you lined up the possible traits of a midfielder, there are not too many boxes the South Fremantle draft prospect does not tick. She has played more than 200 junior games of football and is as tough and uncompromising as anyone else going around, with a high floor to build upon for the future.

The West Australian’s football career started earlier than most, playing 13 games for Jadakot Jets way back in 2015. Before 2020 and having only just finished primary school, Morgan had already clocked up 100 matches for the Jets, progressing through the pathways. A further 37 games over the next two seasons showed off Morgan’s durability and consistency leading up to her triple bottom-age year.

Morgan had a delayed start to the Rogers Cup season in 2022, making her South Fremantle debut in Round 10, reaching the finals in her first year there before going back to run out for the Jets in a further three games. By Under 16s level, she was fit and firing, reaching the WAFLW Rogers Cup Grand Final for the Bulldogs, having been one of the most prolific players in the competition.

The midfielder had six bests among eight games for the juniors, while cracking into the League side in Round 12 just a few weeks after her 16th birthday. She only played the six League games but was so much of a standout that she was initially awarded the Rising Star before it was re-awarded to Evie Cowcher who fitted the criteria of most votes in the Dhara Kerr Medal from a first year player.

Despite not being the official Rising Star, Morgan certainly was that in her own right, and having had a successful National Development Championships, she followed into her bottom-age campaign with plenty of confidence. Unfortunately injury struck again and kept Morgan out for most of the WAFLW season, only returning for the final round after going down in Round 3.

Luckily for the West Australian, the National Championships were played post-state league season, and while Morgan admittedly was underdone, still battled through to have an impact for the Sandgropers. A spot in the National Futures game followed, and though being “one of the most unlucky not to make the National Academy” according to Female Talent Manager Trent Cooper, Morgan proceeded to let her football do the talking.

She played eight WAFLW games and then throughout the national carnival where she averaged 18.5 disposals, 3.5 marks, 3.0 clearances, 2.3 inside 50s and 3.3 rebound 50s spending time through the middle and at half-forward too. Naturally an onballer, Morgan capped off her junior career on a high with a National Draft Combine invitation.

STRENGTHS:

+ Clean hands
+ Strength
+ Contested ball
+ Skills
+ Dual-sided
+ Work rate
+ Defensive pressure

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Speed
- Scoreboard impact

A strong contested midfielder, Morgan is as mentioned, a natural footballer. She is clean, has good skills, can win it anywhere, and uses both sides of her body efficiently. Though inside-leaning, Morgan does work to the outside to get involved and can work into space to go from there. With ball in hand, Morgan can do a lot of damage and stands out compared to her peers.

The biggest point of difference Morgan has is her ability to get it done on both sides, which helps when at the stoppage. The South Fremantle prospect can turn to the right or left out of congestion, and with clean hands and neat foot skills, she will be able to put the ball into the right spots down the ground or into space.

A high possession-retention player, Morgan usually keeps within her wheelhouse and is more of a value ball user. While she is less of a risk taker than most, her ability to use the ball efficiently and get it to her teammates' advantage is consistent. Even if her efficiency itself is down, Morgan makes smart decisions and is more efficient than stats might suggest.

Outside of her ball use, Morgan is also strong on the defensive end with fierce tackling and a high work rate. The South Fremantle junior will hunt down the opposition or the loose ball and her repeat efforts are consistent throughout four quarters. For a player who does her best work on the inside, Morgan covers the ground well and gets back to help out the defensive 50, as well as push forward to set up her teammates.

As is so often the case with naturally gifted footballers, the main knock on Morgan is her speed and though her work rate and ability to transition and get involved is not in question, she does lack that breakaway speed. It is an area she can continue to build on but has the desire to improve and has shown a dedication to focus on that exact area.

In addition to her speed, an area Morgan can further improve is her offensive impact, notably her scoreboard impact. As a midfielder, she is very much a first or second possession link-up player who is often the cog before the distributor going inside 50. Having kicked just one WAFLW goal across three seasons - and none at the national carnival - she has not been a notable goakicker over the journey. Adding that aspect to her game will make her a more damaging offensive midfielder to go with her defensive qualities.

As a whole, Morgan is a well-rounded player who defensively is elite, and offensively solid with those areas of improvement. She has a high floor with a consistent approach to her football, and using either side of her body, can effectively distribute the ball from inside to outside well.

DRAFT RANGE: 40-60

SUMMARY:

Renee Morgan is a player who will likely land in the second half of the draft, with speed always a question mark when it comes to draft prospects. However her wide variety of strengths from her natural footballing to defensive attributes should hold her in good stead and put her in the framer ot be picked up.
