SNAPSHOT: “A consistent rebounder who has nice skills and great ground level pressure to be an all-round defender”

Rhianna Ingram is one of the Gold Coast Suns Academy members who should attract interest from across the country as she looms as a mid-draft option with a nice balance of offensive and defensive traits. After being a reliable player leading up to 2025, Ingram’s consistency was incredible throughout her top-age season and has put her firmly in the draft frame.

Ingram’s footy journey started in 2020 when she started high school, wanting to join a local club. She found Pacific Pines where the future Suns Academy member would play 10 games at Under 13s level, and get a taste for Under 15s too. Over the next couple of seasons, Ingram would establish herself in the Pac Power side, where she reached a grand final in Division 2 and also spent time playing through Division 1 as well.

The 2023 season was a breakthough for Ingram who represented the Suns Academy at the National Development Championships and moved up to play with Southport in the Under 15s. Alongside her age group, Ingram got the opportunity to test herself in the Under 17s, and was playing against some of the best juniors the state had to offer.

In 2024, Ingram cracked through to win a QAFLW Reserves flag with Southport, named among the best four times from seven games, while also reaching the grand final at Under 17s level, but going down in that decider to Sherwood Magpies. At the same time, Ingram represented her school – Pacific Pines State High School – and of course the Gold Coast Suns Academy, with the latter seeing her average 9.3 disposals, 1.5 marks and 1.3 inside 50s, also kicking a rare goal from the four games.

Fast forward to her top-age campaign, and Ingram went to a completely different level. She raised her production rate to 25.3 disposals, 3.8 marks, 2.3 tackles and 6.3 rebound 50s, while also running at 66.7 per cent kicking efficiency. That form locked in a spot with Queensland, and she went even better there, recording a 76.1 per cent kicking efficiency from 17.3 disposals, 1.5 marks, 2.5 tackles and 4.8 rebound 50s. Her remarkably consistent season – which included another QAFLW flag this time with the Southport seniors – gained her a National Draft Combine invite.

STRENGTHS:

+ Rebounding
+ Run-and-carry
+ Consistency
+ Footy IQ
+ Decision making
+ Skills
+ Defensive pressure

IMPROVEMENTS:

- One-on-ones
- Explosive speed

Ingram is a smart footballer who has some really nice traits that can impact at any level. Having already played against senior opponents, she is not overawed by the prospect. Looking at her footballing traits, her clean skills, footy IQ and decision making standout attributes. With ball in hand, Ingram does not panic, even with pressure oncoming, and on top of those areas, she is almost always a composed user.

Though a predominant kick-first player - as you would expect from a rebounding defender - Ingram had a lopsided handball-to-kick ratio last year when playing in the front half. Her work with the ball is what she does best though, with her surge mentality a really valuable asset. She is not explosive - and that is perhaps a knock - but neither are a lot of rebounding defenders in this draft class - and Ingram has quite a few covered for her skill and smarts.

In an open draft, she would be pushing the top 30 given her consistency, and she may well land inside there. The question will be how much work other clubs have done into her, because if they have, they could see a valuable rebounder who can make an immediate impact at the next level. She runs hard, rarely wastes a touch and will also produce the defensive acts you need from a two-way back.

Defensively, Ingram applies enough ground level pressure and while her go is to win the ball and take it out of the back 50, she will also get her hands dirty and fight for the contested pill. It is a point of difference compared to a lot of rebounding half-backs who might be more receivers and then distributors, but Ingram will add a pre-emptive step of getting it herself if need be. Her repeat contest work - including give-and-go's or short kicks then run past to keep the ball moving - is another aspect she is more than familiar with at multiple levels.

From an improvements standpoint, aside from her explosiveness that could improve, Ingram noted her one-on-one ability is an aspect that could develop further. She is reliable in the air, reads the play well, but is not super athletic in the sense that she will leap over opponents or higher than them, so her positioning and getting to the right spot is so valuable. Once she can hold her place, she will be able to win the ball, but if engaged in a one-on-one, can be outmuscled or against a more athletic player, can find it difficult to spoil.

Ingram's best work is done with the ball in dispute at ground level and once she has ball in hand, because she surges the pill out of defence and down the ground. She adds a really important asset to any side, and could well be a player that a club outside Queensland rates highly and may pounce early to secure her depending on how the draft is going for the Suns.

DRAFT RANGE: 30-50

SUMMARY:

Rhianna Ingram is just a really consistent, natural footballer who is gettable for the 17 other clubs if one if willing to take a chance earlier in the draft given the amount of players Gold Coast will be trying to manage. Having proven herself throughout the entire season, she can be a safe selection for any side, and you know exactly what she is going to give you.
