Described as somewhat of a slow burn, Rome Burgoyne long been touted as having the most potential of the Burgoyne brothers (sons of Peter), but is now beginning to match his talent with training standards and work rate. He's one of several players tied to Port Adelaide this year, via father-son eligibility.
There are few smoother movers than those of the Burgoyne clan and Rome is no different. His deft shifts of the hips and poise with ball in hand are joys to watch, often capped off by neat ball use. Such composed decision making is why Burgoyne seems best suited to a role off half-back, having also rolled through midfield - he has the size and clean handling to do so.
Perhaps the factor holding him back from more on-ball minutes is his endurance, which he has improved over the last year. He has also shown growth in his defensive acts, particularly in Woodville-West Torrens' SANFL Under 18s Grand Final victory this season. If he can remain consistent in both departments, he can make the most of his offensive skillset.
