SNAPSHOT: “An explosive midfielder-forward who battled injuries this year, but got to showcase his power and craft which draw comparisons to Dustin Martin.” – Michael Alvaro

Sam Lalor is among the handful of players in the pick one conversation this year. The top Greater Western Victoria (GWV) prospect, and talented dual-sportsman, was set to undergo his first full footballing preseason heading into 2024 but faced some injury setbacks along the way. A hip complaint was followed by foot and quad niggles, and culminated in the hamstring strain which ended his campaign in Wildcard Round.

Still, Lalor’s footballing prowess has been evident for some time. Usually coming in off a cricketing summer, he showed more than enough throughout his under-age journey to suggest he would end up a highly touted top-age talent. He was an Under 16 All-Australian and made his Coates Talent League debut that same year (2022), playing four games for the Rebels.

Lalor would go on to play up a grade in his Vic Country Under 18s debut last year, as a bottom-ager. He made two representative appearances on top of his eight for GWV, between commitments for school side Geelong Grammar in the APS competition. On either end of his various setbacks, Lalor turned out for the AFL Academy against Footscray this year and returned for three games during the National Championships.

His ability to hit the ground running upon each seperate return from injury could be credited to his ability to impact as a forward. He booted seven goals in his first game back at APS level, and spent plenty of time inside 50 as Vic Country came mere seconds away from taking out the Under 18 title. Such impact forward of centre has seen the Collingwood fan draw comparisons to Jordan De Goey, and Richmond great Dustin Martin.

Lalor regards the 25 disposals, five marks, six inside 50s and one goal he amassed against Geelong Falcons as his finest performance of the season. That came a week before he toughed out a season-ending hamstring injury while suffering hypothermia by camping in the goalsquare against Tasmania, just to ensure the Rebels would advance to finals. His 12-14 week injury saw him sit out the National Draft Combine.

STRENGTHS:

+ Clean hands
+ Kick penetration
+ Physicality
+ Power
+ Scoreboard impact
+ Tackling

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Durability
- Endurance

While his exploits inside attacking 50 have been handy this year, Lalor shines brightest as a bull at the contest. He's a one-touch first possession winner with imposing physical traits, which he uses to dominate the inside and burst to the outer. His clean hands and big frame also translate to marking the ball strongly, taking pack marks around the ground or absorbing contact one-on-one before reeling the ball in.

At 188cm, Lalor looked like a man amongst boys at times this year. He showed he could stand up in, break through, or roll tackles off his back, and fended off opponents at will. He hits hard too, laying punishing tackles and ragdolling unsuspecting opponents on the rare occasion he is beaten to the ball. Those kinds of acts lend to his leadership qualities, as he sets an ominous tone at the contest - going both ways.

Lalor's explosive power elevates him above being just a one-dimensional extractor. What's more, he impacts forward of centre with penetrative kicking and high scoreboard impact. Lalor's punchy ball delivery inside 50 matches a sound short-range game, and needless to say he is neat by hand. He is also a threat deep inside 50 where he beats opponents one-out and can finish his chances, which is quite in vogue for modern day midfielders.

One of the great early examples of Lalor's potential as a forward came in Round 2 of last year's Coates Talent League season. With GWV trailing the Sydney Swans Academy by 26 points in the final quarter, the then-bottom-ager stepped up with two of the game's last three goals to help his side snatch a four-point win. That same quality was seen in Vic Country colours this year, and in his seven-goal return from injury for Geelong Grammar.

Lalor was a consistent scorer at APS level and booted four majors in his three National Championships appearances this year - including a hat-trick against the Allies. He backed it up with some exceptional games through midfield, too. Lalor racked up 34 touches in his first outing for GWV in 2024, and while his numbers were low at times, has proven capable of big hauls as a primary on-baller.

An arduous preseason faces Lalor in order to rebuild his endurance base, and the durability to become a full-time AFL midfielder. He showed improvements to his outside game at times this year, but was a touch underdone given his repeat injury setbacks - hence the bulk blocks of forward time. Evasiveness is another area Lalor is looking to improve on, so as to not solely rely on his physical gifts to escape the contest.

DRAFT RANGE: Top 10

SUMMARY:

Lalor is a player whose potential is only just beginning to be uncovered. Given his interrupted season and devotion to cricket during most summers as a junior, he could well soar to new heights in a full-time professional environment. He clearly falls into the readymade category with his size and power, able to impose his physicality on the contest and impact up forward. Players with some game-winning qualities and the right attitude to get stuck into dirty work are golden at the top level. Collingwood is yet to speak to Lalor, who supports the Pies, though he will likely be snapped up early in the piece with Richmond said to be considering him amongst a host of options at pick one. He still has plenty of development left in him and it would only be fitting to see him enter the fold at Tigerland as fellow number four, Dustin Martin, exits.
