SNAPSHOT: “A hard-running defender-midfielder who has great defensive qualities.”

Sophie Thredgold oozes leadership qualities and improved at an impressive rate over the last couple of seasons to put herself in firm draft contention for this year’s AFLW Draft. The South Australian vice-captain followed on from a strong debut season at SANFLW season last year to further stake her claim, and while she does have areas to work on, brings a high character to the table as well.

Thredgold’s footy journey started at Glenunga and played 11 games for the Rams in 2018, before maintaining that effort over the next four seasons. A breakthrough season came in 2022 where she played 16 games and was named among the best 10 times when her side reached the preliminary final. An impressive five-goal haul that season showed she could hit the scoreboard when required as well.

In her double bottom-age year of 2023, Thredgold had moved up to the Under 17.5s at Glenunga where her side again just fell short though she reached a grand final in Division 1. Across the course of the season, the Sturt junior did play across Divisions 1-3, but took until 2024 to crack in for a senior Sturt game in the SANFLW.

Thredgold played 14 games through the competition, averaging 9.7 disposals, 2.6 marks, 1.9 tackles and 2.6 rebound 50s, with her form justifying a place in the South Australian Under 18s squad. Running out in all three games for the Croweaters, Thredgold held her own, and within 12 months was named vice-captain of the squad.

An injury to skipper Imogen Trengove in the penultimate game of the 2025 AFLW Under 18 Championships saw Thredgold take the reigns as skipper for the last match of the carnival against Vic Country. She showed leadership qualities throughout, but got the official nod for that clash. It capped off a solid year for the Double Blues defender-midfielder who increased her output at state league level to average 12.1 disposals, 2.3 marks and 4.5 tackles.

Sometimes clubs just need a player who will give 100 per cent and take any job that is required of them. That is Thredgold to a t, who never complains and just goes out and performs in a no-frills way. She has plenty of eye-catching strengths, and also a number of improvements, but the South Australian talent has improved to the point of being in the draft conversation off the back of dedication and hard work.

Starting off on her athletic profile, Thredgold is a nice mover despite having a strong build for a general defender. She competes one-on-one really well, but her ground level speed paired with a high endurance level makes her a valuable player coming off half-back. She blitz the South Australian State Draft Combine, including clocking up a time of 8:00 minutes in the 2km time trial, just holding off Sturt teammate and literal athlete Lily Smart in a tough battle.

Thredgold's overall player performance rating (PPR) at the Draft Combine was 89.1, which was the best of the South Australian players. While some players do not always show their athleticism out on the field, Thredgold certainly does, and she has some great speed off the mark, but also nice agility and a handy vertical leap too.

A blistering 3.169-second 20m sprint and 8.42-second agility test both have her among the very best scores in those disciplines, and the way she moves off half-back, it comes as no surprise. But despite being an athlete, her strength one-on-one both in the air and at ground level helps her play against a multitude of defender.

While outsized against key position types, Thredgold will always have a crack if required, but is best suited to that dangerous small - where she can match their athleticism and beat them for strength - or undersized tall - where she match for strength and beat them athletically - which provides versatility for AFLW clubs.

Thredgold's main knock is on her kicking, with her efficiency and refining her kick still a work in progress. It has gone from being a detriment to just being a required improvement, so the work already done is a credit to her and the dedication she has put in. That, along with potentially lifting her production rates would be handy, but if she ends up more of a lockdown defender, then neither are of particular major concern.

DRAFT RANGE: Late

SUMMARY:

Sophie Thredgold has come on in leaps and bounds the last couple of seasons and put herself in the draft frame off some great SANFLW football. Her national championships were also really solid, and with a great athletic foundational base and high character, she is one who will stop at nothing to get better. The South Australian is a hard worker, and most likely ends up interstate if she is selected in this year’s AFLW Draft.
