SNAPSHOT: “A hard-running, contested beast who can also dominate opponents in the air.”

Stella Huxtable has been one of the most consistent players over the last couple of seasons, with her inside work and ability to impact up forward among her most impressive traits. She was perhaps a touch unlucky to not receive a National Draft Combine invite, but looms as the Geelong region’s top prospect in 2025.

Huxtable has been a sports fanatic over the journey, splitting her football with cricket and netball, though her desire to chase her AFLW Draft dream. It all started back in Torquay where the talented midfielder played 11 games in 2017 which would be her first season at the Tigers. By the time the global pandemic put a halt to the competitions across the state, Huxtable had notched up 35 games and was building a nice profile around the league.

Returning to the sport in 2021, she booted 12 goals in the space of nine games through the Under 15s Division 1, and it was no surprise that the talented junior was in the Barwon Cats lineup for the two V/Line Cups that took place across April and September of 2022 – making up for the lack of one the year before. She was also named best on in Torquay’s Division 1 flag that season, capping off a year where she booted 17 goals in 13 games.

In a rare occurrance for Coates Talent League Under 18s level, Huxtable made her debut and played a whopping eight games in 2022 at the age of 14. She averaged 8.6 disposals and laid 2.9 tackles showing she could hold her own against far older opponents. A stint with Vic Country Under 16s the next season lead into a double bottom-age campaign with the Falcons, albeit only the six games as the Geelong side had plenty of older talent.

Bouncing back to play a full 16-game season as a bottom-ager, Huxtable averaged 19.1 disposals, 3.0 marks, 4.3 tackles, 3.4 inside 50s and kicked 10 goals. She earned a spot with Vic Country and showed plenty of signs up forward, clunking four marks per match from 11.5 disposals, 3.5 inside 50s and kicking a goal too.

That form continued into her top-age season, where the ever-reliable Huxtable racked up a massive 27.0 disposals, 2.5 marks, 6.2 tackles, 6.3 clearances, 3.1 inside 50s and kicked another 10 goals across her 12 games with the Falcons. Capping off representative duties, Huxtable had 17.0 disposals, 2.5 tackles and a huge 5.0 clearances for the ‘Big V’ despite splitting her time between midfield and attack, kicking a great goal during the carnival as well.

Huxtable’s consistency over four seasons resulted in her receiving a Draft Combine invite, and though perhaps unlucky not to be a National one, still had AFLW club interest with a State invite. She also does not turn 18 until after the draft as one of the youngest in the crop.

STRENGTHS:

+ Contested work
+ One-on-ones
+ Overhead marking
+ Clean hands
+ Strength
+ Endurance
+ Defensive pressure
+ Footy IQ

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Explosive speed
- Kicking efficiency
- Goalkicking accuracy

Huxtable certainly has the traits to make it at the next level as an inside midfielder/forward, and has shown said traits over the last few years. Around the ball, Huxtable is a consistent extractor, and boasts clean hands as well as great strength to win a hardball, and rip it from the opposition. Offensively she can clear it from congestion, while defensively she pins opponents with terrific tackling technique.

With ball in hand, her delivery through traffic is sound, and her weighting of handballs to space is a delight, able to find the right option and put it so her teammates can run onto it without breaking stride. By foot, it is a different story. Huxtable can roost it a fair way off her trusty left, but the efficiency with which it travels is not as high.

That kicking efficiency is a main improvement for Huxtable, though that is not to say she is not damaging, because her hurt factor in the front half can be particularly high. When she wins it, she puts the ball into dangerous areas, and with any time or space, can pick out the right options as she does have some terrific footy smarts. It is more a case of when she is under pressure or trying to break away from the stoppage that the inefficiency creeps in.

At her height, Huxtable is a good size to also play forward, and her hands in the air are some of the best of any rotating midfielder going forward. She can clunk grabs, and is more than comfortable competing one-on-one, and that ability both in the air and at ground level is sensational. While her contested gamestyle is her bread and butter, Huxtable spreads well and wins it on the outside too.

Her endurance base aids the Geelong Falcons midfielder in finding the ball all around the ground, and she might first win it at the coalface, but so often she will be inside 50 ready to receive off the very next kick. That endurance helps her cover the ground well late as she does lack that explosiveness that some inside midfielders tend to have. Thanks to her strength and power, she can break or shrug tackles, and her clean hands do the rest.

As mentioned before, defensively, Huxtable is also very strong, and never lets her team down. She leads by example and fits in to any midfield, making her teammates walk taller. If she is up forward, Huxtable can be the difference. At times her inaccuracy in front of goal can sting a little, but if she can sharpen that up, then as a forward she will hit the scoreboard consistently.

Quite often you hear the saying about drafting players on what they can do, rather than what they can't, and Huxtable falls into that boat. She has a lot of quality traits, and if clubs can overlook the few areas she needs to improve on - and help her get there - no doubt she will develop into a quality player at the elite level.

DRAFT RANGE: 30-60

SUMMARY:

Stella Huxtable is a quality inside midfielder and forward, and will beat opponents in the air or at ground level. Offensively she can dictate games both from the stoppage or inside 50, and defensively she will throw everything at the opposition around the clearances. She might have some limitations in her game, but her strengths are quality, and she deserves a chance to go to another level.
