With AFL recruiters scouring the country for hidden gems and potential mature-age recruits, Tai Hayes is a prospect who put his name on the map in 2025. The nephew of St Kilda champion Lenny grew up playing footy on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, but it was his breakout QAFL season for Palm Beach Currumbin which put him on Southport's radar.
Making his VFL debut in Round 2 of this year, Hayes quickly made the wing his own and played every game until an ankle injury ended his season in Round 20. He had garnered a state draft combine invite but was ultimately unable to test. The soon-to-be 21-year-old is well regarded for his use the ball, boasting a raking left-foot kick as the standout feature of his game.
As any good wingman should, Hayes also works hard going both ways thanks to a strong running ability. He impacted inside 50 with three two-goal games this year, while also showcasing aerial strength and the willingness to put his body on the line. He remains relatively lightly framed, however, and will be a long-term option given his injury - plus a relative lack of exposure.
DRAFT RANGE: Late/Rookie
