SNAPSHOT: “A powerful small with dynamite left-foot kicking and explosive speed to impact going both ways.” – Michael Alvaro

Talor Byrne rocketed up draft boards in 2025, carrying the momentum from a promising Coates Talent League Grand Final at the end of 2024. His Greater Western Victoria (GWV) side went down that day, but a bottom-aged Byrne booted two goals to provide a glimpse of his exciting talent. It capped off a steady season for the Koroit product, who played 12 games for an average 7.1 disposals and seven total goals.

Fast forward to 2025, and the pocket rocket meant business off the bat. Byrne’s 23 disposals, seven inside 50s and one goal in a first-up win over Geelong proved a sign of things to come, as he produced a block of form which warranted selection in the Vic Country squad. He missed game one through a corkie but went on to play the remaining three matches, including a five-goal haul against Vic Metro.

Having shown his wares as a midfielder, Byrne progressively spent more time forward where he is likely to end up at the top level. On top of his breakout game for the Big V, he posted 22 disposals, nine tackles and three goals in the Rebels’ Round 12 win over Northern to further prove his credentials inside 50. In his own words, he “can do a bit of damage” no matter the role.

Byrne went on to take out GWV’s best and fairest award and was named in the Coates Talent League Team of the Year. He was the region’s sole National Draft Combine invitee this year on the back of a deep postseason run, bowing out to eventual premier Eastern in the preliminary final stage. His power was evident with strong results at the combine, which compliments his on-field feats.

STRENGTHS:

+ Clean hands
+ Evasiveness
+ Power
+ Pressure
+ Speed
+ Toughness

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Endurance
- Size

Football is increasingly leaning towards speed being king and Byrne suits that trend down to the ground. He plays at 100 per cent intensity, possessing genuine power and explosiveness to keep the play flowing. He cracks in hard at the contest like any good country footballer, but just as importantly is able to break clear after prising possession. From there, his speed and potent left-foot kicking are enough to cause the opposition headaches.

Byrne's evasiveness and crumbing ability are central to why he would make a terrific small forward in any era. He positions expertly front-and-centre and is able to not only read the ball off hands, but also use his pace to arrive at the drop zone first. Once in prime position, his hands are wickedly clean and he has the smarts to navigate traffic en route to goal. Those traits make him a nightmare to contain inside 50 and at stoppages around the ground.

Another weapon in Byrne's arsenal is his overhead marking ability. He can hit up on the lead or find space in dangerous launch zones, possessing a powerful leap and vice-like hands. His gutsy nature is key to punching above his weight so often, particularly in an aerial or contested sense. Byrne is not afraid to put his body on the line and can produce highlight reel plays, like his speccy against Vic Metro at the National Championships.

Despite standing at 174cm, Byrne is also an incredibly tough one-on-one matchup. His core strength makes him difficult to move off the line of the ball in marking contests, or when chasing up the loose pill. It makes him a menace defensively too, as he applies desperate second efforts and is often seen diving over the ball. He is capable of laying crunching tackles too, shutting down opponents with a combination of strength and speed.

While certainly a high-impact type who seems full of energy, endurance is an area Byrne has sought to improve on. He will also inevitably have question marks raised over his size, although holds his own against bigger bodies and is more than willing to compete. It has never held him back, he's such a goer. As a small forward, Byrne may also seek to refine his finishing touch after booting 9.11 in a productive Coates Talent League campaign.

DRAFT RANGE: 25-40

SUMMARY:

Byrne possesses quite a well-rounded skillset which suits how modern day small forwards operate. He plays at a high intensity and can get it done going both ways, either crafting direct paths towards goal or applying punishing pressure to the opposition. Long-distance travel has been part of Byrne’s journey and he will have no issues heading interstate. His no-fuss demeanour and on-field exploits will likely endear him to any supporter base, no less recruiters holding picks within the second round.
