It was somewhat a year of what could have been for Gippsland Power prospect Thomas Matthews. The livewire forward finished 2024 strongly and was spurred into a big preseason by missing out on the initial Vic Country hub. Named captain for Gippsland, he entered his top-age campaign with high hopes but only managed four games, hampered by a PCL injury.

In that time, Matthews eventually worked his way into the Vic Country squad having booted four goals in a trial match. His speed and endeavour could hardly be questioned, causing the opposition headaches with slick ground level craft and relentless defensive pressure. What's more, he produced big moments - whether that be a pack mark, rundown tackle, or crucial goal.

It's a shame Matthews' knee injury robbed him of the chance to showcase his energetic style more often in 2025. You have to be elite to make it at 171cm and he has all the right traits to at the very least be in consideration for over-age status. If not, clubs will take a long-term view on him as a potential late-draft option or rookie who will undoubtedly give it his all. He's a ripper.
